On a purely spiritual view...I agree with Pope Francis. But my personal belief agrees there should be a death sentence. Someone dying before their time might affect the entire balance of nature. By staying alive...maybe the criminal converts. Or maybe the criminal needs to say something spiritualy important to someone. And because of the criminal...many are converted. We should never take a soul...that is Gods job.
I'm not sure if I got the correct article or not, but, I found a couple with Fr. Roux. I have great respect for him. It is very confusing what is going on in the Church right now and we are certainly all being tested. Where will it all go? Who knows? We are entering a dark time though where the dogmas appear to be becoming obscured by worldly thought.
Totally agree. When I read this years ago, I thought it too Protestant thinking. But today, I am kinda believing it.

Eleven hundred Communist plants who were homosexual over the space of roughly 20 years could create massive chaos in the Church by the time they would "mature" in their priesthoods. Of 1,100 men, surely a good number would have advanced to bishops, archbishops and even cardinals. And their primary role would have been to recruit the next generation of men for the seminaries, in other words, the men who were sitting in seminaries in the United States in the 1960s and 1970s and being ordained in that time frame. Is this what happened? Does this explain, or at least help explain, the massive, near-sudden acceptance of homosexuality among the clergy over the past 20 or so years? It's hard to argue against such a conclusion. In fact, nearly very aberration and evil, every horrible catechesis, every abuse-ridden Mass, every gay music director, liturgy director youth director, every sordid homosexual affair, every busted gay bishop and cardinal, every case of child molestation by priests, bishops and cardinals, every open embrace of the sodomite agenda in the Church these days, all of it is easily explained by this simple hypothesis. Communism, which Our Lady specifically warned about at Fatima as spreading its errors all over the world, infiltrated into the Church by homosexual men bent on destroying the Church by destroying the priesthood. Does anyone have a better explanation? Do any of the bishops care to step up and say precisely why this might be wrong? Would any senior, aging cardinals issuing statements that they knew nothing about McCarrick — who would have been in seminary or ordained in the 1960s and 1970s and would have sat atop the complete collapse of the Church in America during their tenures — would any of them like to say why none of this is plausible? The same leadership who have been quiet on the sins of abortion, contraception, sacrilegious Holy Communions and so forth? The same leaders again who refuse to answer the most pressing questions on this matter: What did they know about McCarrick, and when did they know it? In fact, would any of you like to explain why the lay faithful should not think that some of you are the second generation of those original homosexual Communist infiltrators bent on the Church's destruction? Because, quite coincidentally, that destruction is precisely what has happened on your watch, and now, all of a sudden, what is being revealed is that some of the highest ranking among you are active homosexuals, or have covered it up for years. Those bishops not involved in this must come clean to the faithful about this evil. This has to be brought to an end, and you have the power to do it. I think now is about the right time to recall St Malachy's prophecy about the popes. If you remember, Abp Georg Ganswein, personal assistant to Pope Benedict XVI, alluded to it. Who will Petrus Romanus (Peter the Roman) be? I surely don't think it is PF. Anyway, I personally believe in this prophecy. "In extreme persecution, the seat of the Holy Roman Church will be occupied by Peter the Roman, who will feed the sheep through many tribulations, at the term of which the city of seven hills will be destroyed, and the formidable Judge will judge his people. The End."

Our Lady asks for the consecration of Russia by the Holy Father in union with the bishops of the world. On June 17, 1689, the Sacred Heart of Jesus manifested to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque. As relayed by St. Margaret Mary, Jesus commanded the king of France to consecrate France to the Sacred Heart. For 100 years, the kings of France did not obey. On June 17, 1789, King Louis XVI of France was stripped of his legislative authority in the course of the upheaval that came to be known as the French Revolution. This same 100 years was the time of the so-called “Enlightenment,” when humanity sought to privilege reason over revelation. (Source: https://www.marian.org/fatima/about/timeline.php) It is interesting that Our Lady's request for the Consecration of Russia took place in 1929 during the period when the communists were actively recruiting men for Catholic seminaries; then, only 3 years later, the Lord appears again and says the Consecration will be made late by the pope and bishops. That's not a lot of turnaround time that Heaven gave for the actual Consecration to take place to prevent everything. But, the Catholic Church did have about 12 years to prepare for the request (1917-1929) through all the devotional requests made by Our Lord and Our Lady during the 1920s. Then, the Vatican was made aware that a request would be eventually forthcoming on December 17, 1927. The Miracle at Fatima should have convinced everyone at the Vatican that Heaven was acting anew in the world. Unfortunately, men of the cloth tend not to listen to children and female religious back then and no comment about today.
You are absolutely right, but the dad reality is that, as Padraig points out, most Catholics will believe Pope Francis has the power to positively change Church teaching, now. This means that the so-called body of the Faith in future will be dependent on the whim of every particular pope. It is a blasphemous appointment of a human pope as one possessing the authority over Christ Himself, the very heresy that the First Vatican Council attempted to oppose. What a mess, but this is exactly what Pope Francis has loudly proclaimed he wants, a mess ("hagan lio!"). May God help us.
Sean don’t beat up on yourself. These are times that would try the faith and understanding of St Teresa of Avila. We are all groping our way through the dark. I am disturbed by the ramifications of this latest move. One traditional “settled” teaching of the Church is changed—what comes next? Break one chink out of the wall and how long before all the bricks tumble? “Watch and pray” is my strategy right now. I know these things must be since scripture and approved apparitions tell us so but it is troubling to the point of terrifying.
That is not what the Gospels say, nor what the Church maintained consistently for two millenia. What has changed? Have we 'evolved' or something? I mean this in the sense that there is no possibility that any pope can declare capital punishment as an intrinsic evil. However, Father Dwight Longenecker does quote a letter from Father Jay Scott Newman which I have just read (thanks to the link from Praetorian) and find very helpful. There is the possibility that we might be over-reacting to the actions of Pope Francis in this case, but this is happening because he has lost the confidence of many of the kind of Catholic that takes the trouble to know his faith. Regardless, his papacy is the source of endless confusion. Oh, for clarity.
As a mouse is used for lab experiments, we are tested to find our weaknesses in the faith. Prayers fasting, fortitude with humility will go a long way in helping our Mother's triumph. As AED, stated Praetorian, don't beat yourself up. It's a distraction and a useful tool of the evil one. You are with us for a reason, this I am convinced. We do not look at yesterday's missteps, but tomorrow's Glory. Our Lady is calling her troops. Let us not lose sight of her Triumph.
What does gospel say? And to say it was ok because Jesus was executed...does not prove much. It proves the Romans were evil. I am just saying if Christianity is really about saving souls then we shouldn't support execution of criminals. But like I said...spiritually I get the reasoning. The part in the Gospel where the Good Thief says he deserves his fate is that to which I refer. Of course, Our Lord's victimhood was an injustice, but not because of the sentence of execution, but that He was innocent. It is not as simple as reducing the Romans to being evil. Our Lord thought enough of them to command us to render Caesar what is due to him. Pilate committed evil, because he took the easy option rather than taking a stand for what he truly believed.
Thank you for reminding me. No one can argue this is not a clear break from 2000 years of clear catholic teaching. Someone here posted we are going to witness the words intrinsically disordered dropped out of the catechism on the subject of homosexuality. Someone tell Joe Crozier and Charlie Johnston to bet on it. What does it really mean the gates of hell will not prevail?
