The biggest sunspot on the face of the sun in more than two decades unleashed a major flare on Friday (Oct. 24), the fourth intense solar storm from the active star in less than a week. This full-disk image of the sun shows the location of the major X3.1 solar flare (lower right) on Oct. 24, 2014. The solar flare erupted from the largest sunspot on the sun in 24 years. Credit: NASA/SDO The solar flare occurred Friday afternoon, reaching its peak at 5:41 p.m. EDT (2141 GMT), and triggered a strong radio blackout at the time, according to the U.S. Space Weather Prediction Center. NASA's sun-watching Solar Dynamics Observatory captured stunning video of the huge solar flare. The flare erupted from a giant active sunspot known as AR 12192 and was classified as an X3.1-class solar storm — one of the most powerful types of solar storms on the sun — but it is not the first time the sunspot has made its presence known. [Biggest Solar Flares of 2014 in Photos] "This is the fourth substantial flare from this active region since Oct. 19," NASA spokesperson Karen Fox wrote in a status update. See how solar flares, sun storms and huge eruptions from the sun work in this SPACE.com infographic. View the full solar storm infographic here. Credit: Karl Tate/SPACE.com Sunspots are regions of the sun forged by shifting magnetic fields that are cooler than their surrounding solar material, giving them their dark, blemish-like appearance. Sunspot AR 12192 dwarfs the Earth and is comparable to Jupiter in its size, according to solar astrophysicist C. Alex Young with NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, who described the sunspot in his blog The Sun Today. The sunspot is the largest of its kind since November 1990, and is larger than a monster sunspot that spawned a series of major solar flares over Halloween in 2003, Young wrote. And on Thursday (Oct. 23), the sunspot was hard to miss during a spectacular partial solar eclipse that was visible from North America. Many of the skywatchers who captured photos of the solar eclipse remarked on the surprising sight of a giant sunspot on the face of the sun. "This was my first time photographing a solar eclipse and I was thrilled to capture the sunspots as well," skywatcher Mark Ezell of Austin, Texas, wrote in an email on Thursday. X-class solar flares are the most powerful eruptions on the sun. When aimed directly at Earth, X-class flares can potentially pose a danger to astronauts and spacecraft in space, and interfere with navigation, radio and communications signals. M-class flares are ranked as moderate sun storms that can supercharge the Earth's aurora displays. There are also weaker classes of solar storms that have little effect on Earth, including C-class, B-class and even A-class storms. "Solar flares are powerful bursts of radiation," Fox wrote in the NASA update. "Harmful radiation from a flare cannot pass through Earth's atmosphere to physically affect humans on the ground, however -- when intense enough -- they can disturb the atmosphere in the layer where GPS and communications signals travel." But X-class solar storms can unleash massive amounts of power. "An X2 is twice as intense as an X1, an X3 is three times as intense, etc.," Fox wrote. Despite its sheer power, the X3.1 solar flare on Friday was not the biggest sun storm of the year. On Feb. 24, the sun erupted with a monster X4.9-class solar flare that has topped the solar events of 2014. Smaller X-class flares have occurred occasionally throughout the year. Young also wrote that sunspot AR 12192 is the largest sunspot of the sun's current 11-year weather cycle, known as Solar Cycle 24. I was right, something happened and it involved the Sun: http://www.space.com/27540-huge-solar-flare-from-giant-sunspot.html Fortunately no one got hurt.
When an excessive, cathartic like desire to see imaginary fears/prophecy fulfilled is so great that a no-show, wanna-be event is seriously put up as a fulfilment event anyways...that would be concerning for mental health professionals methinks . If you are right I wonder why it was so important that the spirit world would give us such advance notice of a major world event that never happened on the day/s predicted, hurt nobody and required lots of imagination to see what event even came close ... but fizzled? In fact the most fearful thing about all this was the false prophecy itself which probably led you to think the sun-cannon pointed towards earth was definitely going to go off and huge devestation on earth would definitely occur? How does the advance warning help if there is nothing to be done about it? And why would goodness issue a prophecy that causes more fear than what happened anyway? The really scary thing is your post appears serious . Mind you, maybe the prophet got the dates wrong and the gun is still going to go off? Its still pointed our way isn't it? Should we let our guard down? But what can we do? Will prayer avert it? Yet there was no call to prayer. Honestly, where does all this sort of thing end? Am I that hard of heart for preferring to ignore all this spurious "prophecy" as little more than the misplaced fears of over-sensitive souls (though rightly fearful in a mad world). Am I that insensitive for just doing the daily thing of sacraments, prayer, good works, good life, duties assigned by my role in life and maybe offering a little hard-nosed advice to my friends when I think they may have gone over the top ?
There was nothing wrong my post. Neither I mentioned the Warning. I simply wrote: <<You say, something will happen around October, 25th? I say, the Sun will be involved.>>. This thread has started because someone thought (well before few months ago) that something could have happened this October, 25th, according to some mystics. The funny thing is that I didn't know about that mystic, but on August I supposed something could have happened on 25th, too. Anyway, did I write that we would all die? Did I write that time would have ceased to exist? I didn't write anything apocalyptic, that might have scared someone particularly susceptible. My "feeling" (I clearly stated that), was that something would have happened on that day, related to the sun, and it clearly happened in some way: - Biggest sunspot on the face of the sun in more than two decades unleashed (2 decades = 20 years!). - Major flare, the fourth intense solar storm from the active star in less than a week. - The flare erupted from a giant active sunspot known as AR 12192 and was classified as an X3.1-class solar storm — one of the most powerful types of solar storms on the sun. - The solar flare triggered a strong radio blackout at the time, according to the U.S. Space Weather Prediction Center. So something undoubtedly happened, as you can see. And a very rare event, too. Fortunately, nothing particularly harmful. If you've found my post to be disturbing in some way, my only suggestion would be to skip it. Please note: I'm not a prophet, nor a mystic, nor I suppose to be, I only wanted to share with you my "feeling" (which is not a prophecy, off course...).
You think the thing the alleged mystics urgently wanted us to know in advance ... was that there would be a harmless, big sunspot pointing towards earth ? BTW even at a human media level what "happened" is a media "beat up". We all know solar flare activity is on an 11 year cycle and we are currently at the top of the current cycle. Essentially all they are saying is that the present sun spot is bigger than the last matching cycle 11 years ago but not bigger than the one before that. So its a contrived "statistic" of zero significance, though it sounds impressive. You must be a young fella to put an exclamation mark next to 20 years. So its not a big deal, just media hype. Lets not be suckers for hyped up media reporting of "statistics" that don't mean anything much at all when understood in context. Oh, the "strong radio blackout" is also relatively meaningless. This also happens all the time in very narrow frequency bands of no concern to the public but is of concern to military and international Ham Radio operators such as myself. We cannot bounce our signals around the world off the ionosphere when there is too much solar activity. It has ever been so. But if you get solar flares so strong as to cause the Aurora Borealis to be visible at latitudes rarely seen in the USA or Australia then that would be a curiosity. This happened at the time of the alleged fulfilment of the prophecy of Fatima (which unsurprisingly also happened at the peak of solar flare cycle). Fifty years earlier or so than Fatima a similar incident at the top of the solar sunspot cycle was so strong that US Telegraph could send messages even when the batteries were disconnected! Last week was not even close to that.
Ok, I hope to be more clear: my intention was not to say: <<Here is what in my opinion the mystic think that in her opinion could happen>>. I said (in short) <<I've a feeling that something will happen on 25th involving the sun.>>. And something, not huge but rare, happened. That's the fact. I don't know what the mystic think that could have happened. I woke up and thought <<Something could happen to the sun.>>, and I decided to post it here. End. Nothing bad happened? I'm happy, then. But now, please let's finish with this unnecessary discussion and let's go ahead in the other threads, there are so many interesting topics to be discussed!
Blue Horizen is welcome to 'move along'... after all, it was Padraig who originally stated that someone contacted him privately while the forum was offline to suggest something was to happen on the 25th. Pijon, you win the purple elephant prize for being correct that it was the Sun. Most of us thought it was going to be an earthquake or Tsunami. After all...it is the end times...
Thanks for your comprehension, I didn't want to offend anyone with my post. Anyway, I'm a new user as you could have noticed, so I haven't had a great deal of time to know some of the members of this board. I'll introduce myself in the "Presentation thread", if it does exist. Please note that, at first, I registered here only to share my "feeling" with you. But now I'll participate to other topics, too.
Leave them alone BH . Make yourself useful and give us your thoughts on the Synod.[I suspect I wont like them]
Welcome Pijon! Feel free to post any 'feeling' you have. We wouldn't be here if we didn't have any also!!
You are right on both counts Mac. (a) If I continue trying to help ground Pijon and MotherSuperior back to planet earth I fear for my own sanity. (b) yes I have thoughts on the Synod you will just hate . What about yourself?
Blue Horizon said "This happened at the time of the alleged fulfilment of the prophecy of Fatima." Alleged? And moreover insinuating that the Miracle can be expained by Science? Being a cyber bully? Are not we here to help build each other up instead of tearing them down? I smell a troll
My friend please reign in your spirit of unwarranted suspicion and inability to handle valid diversity of opinion. This is more truly what breaks down Unity. So many seem to confuse Unity with Uniformity in judgements that are prudential and hence optional. If you look around Catholic discussions on the Net, and indeed on this very website, you will see that not all Catholics believe that the "strange lights" prophesied by Lucia were necessarily miraculous. So I am not insinuating anything. I am outrightly sharing my belief that the more credible explanation of the "strange lights" was an extraordinary occurrence of the Aurora Borealis. It seems strange to me that posters can share all manner of concerning and unsubstantiated intuitions/prophecies in this thread but I am unable to share my own substantiated thoughts... SI, exactly why do you think that the holding of this opinion (who on earth knows for absolute sure anyway) makes me any less a Catholic than your good self?
Sorry Padraig, I responded below and then read your shot across my bows here! I will desist if people are complaining. It is sad that complainants have to hide behind mum's skirt though .
I don't want to go under a bus with Blue but I find it hard to see that he merits complaints made against him. If his point of view is untenable then I really have to scratch my head. Can't people just see it as practise for dealing with real enemies? Blue- who is your Lord and Savior? I can guess the answer but I think others doubt. Any apparition, approved or otherwise, adds nothing to the deposit of faith. Get over it
Bh, Your starting point is wrong. If this was a general forum, then your statements would be appropriate. But since this is a forum based on faith...your comments are not appropriate. As brilliant as you might think you are...its the starting point where you are lacking. Brother al
