So kids start summer break from school this week. I read Benedictine Option recently (READ IT!!!!) Anyways from that book I want to start forming my kids faith better. What I plan to do this summer is every day M-F to have a question they need to research and answer before they can get on any electronics. Questions like How do we know the Catholic Church is the one true church Sola Scriptura Saved by faith alone Marriage between one man and one woman How do we know Peter was Pope How do we know the real presence in the Eucharist. So here is where I could use some help... who has some ideas that could add to this thread so when i get stuck i can find some other ideas
Good for you Dean. This is the most neglected duty of most parents. So many leave it up to the school . ''I tell my relatives and best friends, ‘If you want your children to fight for their faith, send them to public school. If you want them to lose their faith, send them to Catholic school.’ ~Archbishop Fulton Sheen
This series of basic apologetics is what I read in book form as a young teenager. I rate them highly. http://www.radioreplies.info/
Wonderful Dean!!! Most parents neglect this today and they don't realize that when someone chooses to become a parent they take on this responsibility and will be judged upon it. This is where the foundation of faith not only your children, but of your grandchildren will be built. I don't have any children but I think it you got a copy of the Baltimore Catechism or something similar and just went through it for ideas it would be chock full. It is pretty straight forward, easy to understand and has all of the essentials your children need to know. If your children are wavering at all in belief you could show them the reality with miracles like the Eucharistic miracle at Sokolka: http://www.therealpresence.org/eucharst/mir/english_pdf/Sokolka1.pdf http://www.therealpresence.org/eucharst/mir/english_pdf/Sokolka2.pdf http://www.therealpresence.org/eucharst/mir/english_pdf/Sokolka3.pdf May Our Lord and Our Lady bless you on this venture.
My son took an apologetics class and his teacher recommended these websites: http://www.scborromeo.org/ http://chnetwork.org/ http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/
I am teaching my two oldest girls (15 and 12) a logic class over the summer, so that they can learn to recognize faulty reasoning (for example, liberalism) and how to defend their position.
I have a series of books on the saints that was written by Mary Fabyan Windeatt and published in the 1940's. Miss Windeatt was a third order Domenican, so mainly wrote about Domenican saints. These books are FABULOUS! They are short, written in a story format, and are full of orthodox Catechism and reinforce the True Presence in the Eucharist. They appeal to both adults and children. I read quite a bit and LOVED these! It may be time for my family to reread them this summer.
Another quick idea...have the kids make St. Terese's "good deed beads"...and then use them! https://thelittleways.com/how-to-make-sacrifice-beads
I used to take stories from scripture or lives of the saints and script them out so the kids could act them. Children love to act. Anything theatrical. I used to use contemporary expressions slang etc that meant the same thing but would make them laugh.
