Some thoughts on the Souls in Purgatory

I am surprised everyone does not see them. My spiritual director told me in his experience their coming is quite common especially to the families of recently deceased...also of course visits from the blessed in heaven.

Ones from hell are less common..as Jesus said a great void is set between us and them {the parable of Lazarus), thank God, but sometimes they do get out, I believe.

There are always Holy Souls around churches. They are not to be feared, they are not called holy for nothing , they only want a helping hand. Which in charity they are entitled too.

The Holy souls in Purgatory is my main devotion. Every prayer I say, Mass I attend is offered for them. Id like to share some ideas for prayer to them, with you all here: in addition to my normal prayers, over the years Ive got creative around my devotions to them so I may help them more, for example: I realised one day that saying a hail Mary when washing my hands is a good enough time span for the soap to kill germs. So now, automatically, whenever I wash my hands, I pray a hail Mary offered for the Holy Souls. In doing so, an otherwise 'wasted' opportunity is effectivly used. I then reasoned: how many repetitive tasks could I use like this, how many things do I do daily that I could turn into a prayer habit for them? What i noticed are LOTS of things: Like how the Fatime prayer was inserted after each mystery of the Rosary, I also include the St Gertrude the great prayer for the Holy Souls after each decade. Another fantastic habit to develop is asking your Guardian Angel to pray for them while you sleep, and, I always offer my inhale and exhales as I sleep for the Holy Souls - small acts that, over time, accumulate to massive and worthwhile help for our friends in Purgatory.
The gratitude they feel for people who ease their suffering is enormous. They will always remember you for helping them, and I always call on them when I need them.

And one more thing; before blessing yourself with holy water on entering a Church, allow one drop of holy water to fall from your finger and offer it for the relief of the suffering of a soul in purgatory.

I say this Prayer for the Holy Souls

O Jesus for the sake of the agony You endured during your fear of death in the garden of gethsemane
    at Your scouring and crowning
on your way to mount calvary
at your crucifixion and at your deeath
have mercy on the Souls in purgatory
and especially on those who are completely forgotten
deliver them from their bitter pains
call them to you and embrace them in your arms in Heaven
(1 Our Father and 1 Hail Mary)
    Lord grant them eternal peace.
    AMEN

When I water my gardens and pots I pray decades of the rosary. One Hail Mary is perfect for one pot or a blueberry bush. I have 5 blueberry bushes with flowers also on either side of the row. I go across and back, a mystery, Our Father, 10 hail marys, Glory be, Oh My Jesus. All are soaked twice. Blueberries are watered. Then it's on to the Clematis wall! Sometimes I offer the prayers to the Poor Holy Souls, other times for other intentions, but as you said, Torrentum, there are so many times when a prayer is perfect to add to an activity. What better way to do chores! I never tried it but I just thought that doing the dishes would be another good time!

Doing the dishes is a great time! Thats how I say a few decades most days. Driving too - Ive a rosary ring for that. I think to pray while you work is a great idea. Its said Padre Pio rarely left down his rosary beads.

Oh yes I pray while driving all the time, I have found though that sometimes it makes me tired. I have always said that praying a rosary is better than any sleeping pill. I used to get frustrated by this but then someone on the forum said it is because it brings so much peace to your soul...so I don't fret about it anymore. I have found though that if I say the prayers rather loudly (like I am having a conversation with someone) that I do not get as tired.
For a few years now I have been carrying a small wooden rosary in my pocket almost every day (one given to me for free from a merchant in Medjugorje). I have rosaries in my car, in my purse, and a little rosary ring and bracelets too for those times I wish to be very discreet (like at work).

I just started doing this yesterday!

Also, washing your hands is a great time to say a hail mary. (I'm a nurse, so I wash my hands a lot...)

    From the Divine Mercy Novena

“Today bring Me THE SOULS WHO ARE IN THE PRISON OF PURGATORY and immerse them in the abyss of My mercy. Let the torrents of My Blood cool down their scorching flames. All these souls are greatly loved by Me. They are making retribution to My justice. It is in your power to bring them relief. Draw all the indulgences from the treasury of My Church and offer them on their behalf. Oh, if you only knew the torments they suffer, you would continually offer for them the alms of the spirit and pay off their debt to My justice.”

Most Merciful Jesus, You Yourself have said that You desire mercy; so I bring into the abode of Your Most Compassionate Heart the souls in Purgatory, souls who are very dear to You, and yet who must make retribution to Your justice. May the streams of Blood and Water which gushed forth from Your Heart put out the flames of the purifying fire, that in that place, too, the power of Your mercy may be praised.

From the terrible heat of the cleansing fire
Rises a cry to Your mercy,
And they receive comfort, refreshment, relief
In the stream of mingled Blood and Water.

Eternal Father, turn Your merciful gaze upon the souls in Purgatory, who are enfolded in the Most Compassionate Heart of Jesus. I beg You, by the sorrowful Passion of Jesus Your Son, and by all the bitterness with which His most sacred Soul was flooded, manifest Your mercy to the souls who are under Your just scrutiny. Look upon them in no other way than through the wounds of Jesus. Your dearly beloved Son; for we firmly believe that there is no limit to Your goodness and compassion. (AMEN)

I always say these two lines which I have put in bold print in the rosary too and say them though out the day. Maria Simma spoke about the children in purgatory, that they have such tender consciences and I always end by saying Lord Jesus, suffer the little children to come unto thee.

The Holy Souls suffer dreadfully. The thought of children in purgatory breaks my heart.

I pray a lot for the Holy Souls, but lately I realise that I am praying specifically for Fr. Matt Wallace. Before, I never knew for sure who was in purgatory, so I prayed for everyone. I would ask St. Anthony to take my Hail Marys, like roses to our Blessed Mother and ask her to help the Holy Souls. Now, I am specifically asking him to go to her to help Fr. Wallace. The first time ever that I believe for sure that a certain person is in purgatory. My question is which is best - just leave it all to Our Lady or to be specific for the soul of Fr. Wallace or both?

I've been thinking about this lately, too. Since I've consecrated myself to the blessed Mother, everything goes to her. And since she's the mediatrix of all graces, she knows best where the grace should go. But, I think it's pleasing to her, and to our Lord, to add our intentions, because it's a way to express our charity for others.

    Padre Pio on Purgatory

Padre Francesco Napolitano reported that in 1945 Fra Pietro, entering his cell at night, saw a young friar sitting on his desk, with the head down like he was meditating. He asked who he was, but he disappeared. Terrorized, he run to Padre Pio. Padre Pio accompanied him back to his cell and said: "That young friar is a poor novice who is serving his purgatory in this cell. But don't worry he will not bother you again, and you will never see him again."
"The souls in Purgatory repay the prayers that we say for them."
"When we pray for the souls in Purgatory we will always get something back."
"The souls in Purgatory pray for us."

But let us not forget what the Holy Souls can do for us when we pray for them,, it was with great joy that I found out after praying for the Holy Souls for many years, that for every soul that my prayers had helped through purgatory would be present at my death and interceding to God for me Wow!

THE HOLY SOULS WILL LESSEN OUR PURGATORY
Another great grace that they obtain for their helpers is a short and easy Purgatory, or possibly its complete remission!
Saint John Massias, the Dominican lay brother, had a wonderful devotion to the Souls in Purgatory. He obtained by his prayers (chiefly by the recitation of the Rosary) the liberation of one million four hundred thousand souls!
In return, they obtained for him the most abundant and extraordinary graces and came at the hour of his death to help and console him and accompany him to Heaven.
This fact is so certain that it was inserted by the Church in the bull of his beatification.
The learned Cardinal Baronius recounts a similar incident.
He was himself called to assist a dying gentleman. Suddenly, a host of blessed spirits appeared in the chamber of death, consoled the dying man and chased away the devils who sought, by a last desperate effort, to compass his ruin.
When asked who they were, they made answer that they were 8, 000 souls whom he had released from Purgatory by his prayers and good works. They were sent by God, so they said, to take him to Heaven without his passing one moment in Purgatory.
St. Gertrude was fiercely tempted by the devil when she came to die. The evil spirit reserves a dangerous and subtle temptation for our last moments. As he could find no other ruse sufficiently clever with which to assail the Saint, he thought to disturb her beautiful peace of soul by suggesting that she would surely remain long years in the awful fires of Purgatory since, he reminded her, she had long ago made over all her suffrages to other souls. But Our Blessed Lord, not content with sending His Angels and the thousands of souls she had released to assist her, came Himself in person to drive away Satan and comfort His dear Saint. He told St. Gertrude that in exchange for all she had done for the Holy Souls, He would take her straight to Heaven and would multiply a hundredfold all her merits.
Blessed Henry Suso, of the Dominican Order, made a compact with a fellow religious to the effect that, when one of the two died, the survivor would offer two Masses each week for his soul, and other prayers as well.
It so fell out that his companion died first, and Blessed Henry commenced immediately to offer the promised Masses. These he continued to say for a long time. At last, quite sure that the soul of his saintly friend had reached Heaven, he ceased offering the Masses.
Great was his sorrow and consternation when the soul of the dead brother appeared to him suffering intensely and chiding him for not celebrating the promised Masses. Blessed Henry replied with deep regret that he had not continued the Masses, believing that his friend must be enjoying the Beatific Vision but he added that he had ever remembered him in prayer.
"O dear Brother Henry, please give me the Masses, for it is the Precious Blood of Jesus that I most need!" cried out the suffering soul. Blessed Henry began anew and, with redoubled fervor, offered Masses and prayers for his friend until he received absolute certitude of his delivery.
Then it was his turn to receive graces and blessings of all kinds from the dear brother he had relieved, and very many times more than he could have expected.
