I was given a book quite some years ago called "read me or rue it" I remember that the person that gave me it said "don't read it if you are not prepared to help as your life wont be the same after reading it" I was a bit taken back by the remark anyway from the day I read the book I pray for the holy souls every night and I feel compelled to offer up my communion for the souls in purgatory. The book itself is a fantastic read I would recommend anyone who has an interest in purgatory..My daily prayer.

"Eternal father I offer you the most precious body and blood of your son our lord Jesus Christ being sacrificed in masses all over the world this day and night for the holy souls in purgatory so at least one soul or maybe all souls will be released from purgatory".Amen

I also add this little prayer at the same time to keep me and my family safe

May I lay down with God and may God lay down with me,May I not lay with evil nor evil lay with me,Marys mantle beneath me, Bridgid's girdle around me ,Blessed Micheal hold my hand and make my peace with the son of grace, if any evil thing pursue me may the Son of God protect me, this night a year from this night for ever and for always Amen.

    John .

Very similar story in a place not too far from you Padraig "Struell Wells" A man was visiting the place one night and sat down ,he started to notice that a lot of people were arriving and was about to leave when a priest started to say mass he thought that he should stay until the mass had ended he was confused at the dress sense of some of the congregation as it seemed they were dressed in victorian style after the mass ended everyone disappeared in a flash and all that was left was the priest the man was startled and confused he approached the priest to ask what had just happened the priest told him that the people were holy souls who had not been reverent at mass whilst they lived and that he "the priest" was saying mass because he had also neglected his priestly duties whilst on earth at that moment the priest disappeared also...

I think though it is often not that they misbehaved at mass but rather that they are allowed to serve out their final purgatory in Church in front of the Blessed Sacrament.

Padre Pio saw one such soul a former novice at the altar in San Giovanni he was there for not keeping the rules. He got attention by knocking over the candle sticks.

I think there are seven circles to purgatory just as there are seven to hell and heaven.Just as indeed there are seven stages in prayer....at the last stage you get to roost in Church.:)

That's why they are often so full of the poor souls , especially at Christmas. Christmas being their big break.

In the Mass we are all there as one. Heaven, Purgatory, and us the Militant Church on Earth. I like to receive my Holy Communion on behalf of all these souls, the dying and those who die that very day and those about to die sudden deaths. One drop of His blood is enough for the whole world. All I can think of when I contemplate Purgatory is mystery and awe.

St Margaret Mary Alocque had a saint for a confessor his name was St Claude Colombiere. A Jesuit and writer. He wrote a lot about the importance of not wasting time.

Anyway you would only have to read a line or two of this guys writing to guess he was a saint, just chock full of zeal and the zeal of the Lord.

But shortly after St Claude died st Margaret Mary comments that he spent a brief time in purgatory for some little fault , apparently in the seventh circle nearest heaven and that he did not suffer. St MM assisted him with her prayers...

St Claude played a huge role in promulgating the Sacred Heart of course. I always take this as a warning how pure we must be to enter through those golden gates.

    Mirjana’s description of Purgatory:

“There are several levels in Purgatory. The more you pray on earth, the higher your level in Purgatory will be…The lowest level is the closest to hell, where the suffering is the most intense. The highest level is closest to Heaven, and there the suffering is the least. What level you are on depends on the state of purity of your soul. The lower the level the people are on in Purgatory, the less they are able to pray and the more they suffer. The higher the level a person is in Purgatory, the easier it is for him to pray, the more he enjoys praying and the less he suffers…The Blessed Mother has asked us to pray for the souls in Purgatory. They are helpless to pray for themselves. Through prayer, we on earth can do much to help them. The Blessed Mother told me that when souls leave Purgatory and go to Heaven most go on Christmas Day.”4

“Many people were there. They were suffering immensely…They were normal people, all kinds. There was much physical suffering…I could see the people shivering, thrashing, and writhing in pain…I saw this place for a short time…The Blessed Mother was with me (during the vision). She explained to me that She wanted me to see Purgatory. She said so many people on earth today do not even know about Purgatory…I could not hear them. I only saw them. The Blessed Mother said so many people who die are quite abandoned by their loved ones. They cannot help themselves in Purgatory. They are totally dependent on the prayers and sacrifices of the generous people on earth who remember them. Our Blessed Mother hopes Her own children will help the souls in Purgatory by prayer and fasting and various penance for the poor souls to make restitution for them…Those who have died no longer have free will as they had on earth. They no longer have a body. It is no longer possible for them to make up for the things that they did when they had their body that hurt and harmed themselves and others. On July 24, 1982, the Blessed Mother said:‘We go to Heaven in full conscious of the separation of the body and soul. It is false to teach people that we are reborn many times and that we pass to different bodies. One is born only once. The body, drawn from the earth, decomposes after death. It never comes back to life again. Man receives a transfigured body. Whoever has done very much evil during his life can go straight to Heaven if he confesses, is truly sorry for what he has done, and receives Communion at the end of his life.’ Our Lady said that the souls in Purgatory can see their loved ones during those moments when we pray for them by name.”5

  15. That last line Donna, is interesting..."Our Lady said that the souls in Purgatory can see their loved ones during the moments when we pray for them by name.....

I'm wondering--does that mean that if we pray for a soul, they then can appear to people like Padraig and are able to convince Padraig to pray for them more---or appear to their loved ones--even....
    How do you translate that??
