We all live in a pagan culture. Maybe even worse than pagan as our culture supports abominable marriages which the pagans would never allow. But when we exam our own lives are they much different from the pagans around us? Mea Culpa. Unfortunately, it is so hard to convert out of the culture that surrounds us. We are all influenced by one degree or another unless we live with the evangelical fervor of the monastic life in an interior manner. I would suggest that the interior castle is where we can take refuge and it takes great self discipline and effort to spring clean the castle every day and ensure the dust and scum of the world does not contaminate our lives. A daily struggle indeed a cross to overcome the ways of the world the flesh and the devil.
The world seems to be totally self-absorbed. In Ireland and the west "clean" eating, yoga, instagram etc. and other self-serving activities seem to be the most popular in these times. The entire culture seems to be built completely on self.

It is hard to believe that the West threw away its Patrimony by discarding its Christian soul. But that is what it has done and sadly I played my part in that at one time---when young. God's mercy is infinite. His patience inscrutable. I will spend eternity thanking Him for his merciful kindness to this most wretched of sinners.
re: cleaning the interior castle ... I recall reading an essay on the parable of the man who was exorcised; the demon returned to find the house cleaned up, so he got seven other demons to join with him and the possessed was in worse shape than before. According to the essayist, the words used in the Greek for "cleaning the house" have a much deeper meanings than that on the surface. Imagine a house that not only has the floors swept, the walls washed, and shelves dusted, but then has NOTHING else there. No fine carpets on the floors; no beautiful paintings or tapestries on the walls, and no books -- good or otherwise -- on the shelves. Rather than work to fill his house (his mind) with the beautiful things of G_D, he has essentially abandoned it, leaving plenty of space for the demons to set up household.
This reminds me of the minimalist movement. They purge their house of clutter and stuff, ridding their lives of materialism and attachment to "things." All of this is good, of course. We should not be attached to anything in this world and material possessions are among the most pointless attachments. You can't take it with you . The movement also promotes decluttering their time of unnecessary "busyness" that is so prevalent of American culture. This is also good - because if we are so busy doing things in our lives that ultimately having nothing to do with saving our soul (or the time leftover to do it) will we be able to save it in the end? The essay you mentioned hit square on the fundamental missing element - God. The majority of those bloggers who preach the message of minimalism leave a void and fill it instead with hobbies or any other apparent better use of their time and resources instead of Jesus (to all public appearances of course. I can only comment on what is written publicly ). It's like humanitarian work - it appears so good, but if it's not done for the glory of God it is dead and there is no merit in it.
