I find it increasingly difficult to be a citizen in the Western world. Iran has been decried as a bad, horrible terror state and enemy for a long time. Now, because we have a war, suddenly Iran should become the United States' friend again? I find that unbelievably hypocritical.
Could this diplomatic realignment in the Middle East reverse historic US support for Israel should it launch a preemptive strike on Iran's nuclear facilities? Will the issue of the US embargo on Russian oil that motivated the US rapprochement with Venezuela in recent days shake US-Israel relations in the coming years?

About 15 years ago or so, I amused myself and others by proposing scenarios taking current events and extrapolating them to show how Biblically-foreseen events could occur. It struck me this morning how this war between Ukraine and Russia could be the trigger that sets off the Oracle Against Damascus (Isaiah 17). In it, Isaiah describes the destruction of Damascus in such a way as to remind the modern reader of a nuclear attack. Recently, Putin decried the American "mercenaries" fighting alongside Ukrainian forces (in fact, these are volunteers providing medical aid and support to both Ukrainian military and civilians) warning that if captured, they will be tried and sentenced for their "crimes". At the same time, he announced that several hundred Syrian "volunteers" (his words, not mine) were prepared to come to the region to help Russia fight this Ukrainian uprising. Iran decides to use this situation to further its own regional ambitions. Shortly after the Syrians arrive in Russia, Syria provokes a situation with Israel. It sends a number of its fighters into Israeli airspace over the Golan to draw the Israelis into an attack. Keep in mind that it's generally accepted (but never officially confirmed) that Israel has nuclear weapons. In the course of this provocation, one of the Syrian fighters breaks off, returning to Syria. (This MAY be a Syrian jet with a Russian pilot. This HAS happened before during the Yom Kippur War.) The fighter is pursued by an Israeli jet, which follows it into Syrian airspace. Remember that Damascus is less than 50 miles away from the Golan. It would take less than 2 seconds for a jet to cross the border and be over Damascus. As the Syrian jet approaches Damascus, it does a peculiar twist-flip and then goes screaming like a bat out of hell towards Iran and away from the city. The Israeli jet doesn't even need to cross the border while shooting at the Syrian. All that is needed is for observers on the ground believe that the Israeli jet followed the Syrian jet to Damascus before releasing a nuclear bomb. (The "twist-flip" by the Syrian jet mentioned earlier is to "toss" the bomb at the target to give the jet enough time to reach a minimal safe distance.) Less than 15 minutes after the bomb detonates, the international media is filled with reports of Israel nuking the capitol city of one of its enemies. Israel denies all of this, of course, but no one in the media believes her, and any evidence to the contrary is simply ignored by mainstream Western media. Later tests of the fallout products will show the nuclear material came from an unknown source. International agreements for reducing the number of nuclear weapons require all signatories to to provide radiographic samples of each "batch" of nuclear weapons material to be provided to the International Atomic Energy Agency. This is for such events: to be able to trace the "provenance" of a weapon by showing which nation's reactor created the material. Israel is not a signatory to the treaty since it officially does not have a nuclear weapons program, so when the tests show the material is of "unknown" provenance, the media immediately start blaming Israel. The bomb, in fact, came from Iran. This has four immediate effects: The Democrats in Congress will now be able to sever relations with Israel, cutting it off from American supplies; Tehran has eliminated a regional rival; given Israeli support for Ukraine, this motivates the Syrian volunteers to take their wrath out upon the Ukrainians; and Russia starts airlifting and shipping humanitarian aid into Syria via the Russian port at Tartus. This humanitarian aid includes a large number of Russian military personnel in order to provide security for Syria against further Israeli aggression. Said military personnel include the better trained and equipped units that were held back from participating in operations in Ukraine. This, of course, sets the stage for the War of Gog and Magog, but that's a later story.
