Magnitude 7.3 quake hits northern Venezuela coast -USGS CARACAS, Aug 21 (Reuters) - A major earthquake of magnitude 7.3 struck the northern coast of Venezuela on Tuesday and shook buildings as far away as the capital, Caracas, the U.S. Geological Survey said. The quake was centered near the town of Carupano, an area of poor fishing communities and was felt as far away as neighboring Colombia to the east and nearby island nations like Trinidad and Tobago, and St. Lucia, to the west and north. There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage, Venezuelan Interior Minister Nestor Reverol said in an internet broadcast on Tuesday. The U.S. Pacific Tsunami Center said the quake could cause small tsunami waves along the coast near the epicenter, 23 miles (37 km) southwest of the town of Carupano. USGS Geophysicist Jessica Turner said the quake's depth, 76.5 miles (123.11 km) below the surface, would dampen some of the shaking but not enough to prevent damage. "A 7.3 magnitude quake is going to cause some damage particularly as in this area structures are vulnerable. The Earth is able to absorb some of the energy, but a 7.3 quake produces a lot of energy," she said by telephone. Turner said the quake's depth caused the quake to be felt as far away such as in Caracas, where witnesses said buildings were shaken. "I feel like I'm about to faint. I'm shaking. It was long," said telemarketing worker Sheny Fuentes, 22, speaking outside her work building in eastern Caracas. "I'm relieved that it doesn't seem like damage was that bad. And there's a long, involved background story about those miracles....involving a nun/sister who was tortured for some time and who or her group smuggled the pics of this miracle out. I believe she lives in the Boston area now. I also believe that she received messages during this period of time. I've forgotten all of the details.
We have been inundated again this year with smoke from fires in Canada pushing the smoke down into western Washington. It has been so bad that I have not been able to do anything outside because my lungs hurt from it. Outdoor school related summer activities have been suspended or moved indoors if they are able. My daughters crew practices have been suspended. We have had some of the most dramatic sun sets I can remember. It is foreboding however, waking up to the orange sky and seeing it all day long. Having lived most of my life in WA I don't ever remember fires or smoke like this in back to back summers. Not only that but things are so incredibly dry for this part of the state even for summer. We always have some fires but nothing like what we are seeing in the western US in these last few years. It would not surprise me to see huge losses like what California is experiencing if this continues.
I am sorry to hear this. I think we may even have some particulate matter in our atmosphere here which has come ftom the West Coast fires I heard something about it today

More than 70 earthquakes have rattled the Ring of Fire, a huge swathe of geologically active tectonic plates stretching from South America to Australia via the western United States and East Asia, in the past three days. First Venezuela was struck by a major 7.3 earthquake last night, with citizens across northern South America and parts of the Caribbean reporting strong shaking. In Venezuela's picturesque palm tree-dotted northern coast, residents said the long quake was terrifying. The tremor made residents nauseous, caused lamps to swing and led people to dash into the streets. The quake was also felt in the capital of Caracas, where residents rushed out of office buildings, as well as in nearby island nations like Trinidad and Tobago, and St. Lucia, to the west and north. Residents in Trinidad and Tobago shared video online showing some damage to buildings. Then Vanuatu, located in the western Pacific Ocean was hit by a strong 6.7 magnitude earthquake. The shallow quake's epicentre was located just a few miles off the northern tip of sparsely populated Ambrym. Officials at Vanuatu's National Disaster Management Office in Port Vila, roughly 120 miles south of the epicentre, had no initial reports of damage. "We felt small shaking for 15 or 30 seconds but we're all good here," spokesman Presley Tari told Reuters by phone. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii said there was no tsunami threat from the quake and authorities in Australia and New Zealand also gave the all-clear. A 5.9 aftershock hit the north of the country this afternoon, sparking more panic in Venezuela. One citizen wrote on earthquake monitoring website EMSC-CSEM: "I was in the office and went straight under the table.” Another said: “I was in a boat moored to a dock and felt the waves ripping the engine.” It comes after dozens of other smaller earthquakes rattled the Ring of Fire, with more than 70 striking in the past three days. It has increased fears for the ‘Big One’ earthquake in the western United States, or another megaquake elsewhere in one of the heavily populated Asian or South American cities on the Ring of Fire. Richard Aster, Professor of Geophysics at Colorado State University, warned recently California is in an “earthquake drought” and overdue a 7.0 quake. He said: “Although many Californians can recount experiencing an earthquake, most have never personally experienced a strong one.
