    Just did some reading up.

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman has said he intends to return Saudi Arabia to "moderate Islam" and open the country to all faiths. (http://www1.cbn.com/cbnnews/world/2017/november/is-a-door-opening-for-christianity-in-saudi-arabia)

Pretty expensive start to this initiative. But I offered him up to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, all the same. In this season of hope, I think I should pray that this leads to something good :D

Interesting ..... but ... it may be more?? Jesus, in Islam, is considered a great prophet ..... even more interesting, He is referred to as: Jesus, Son of Mary. Mary is also held in high regard in Islam. I only know this 'cause while operating out of Saudi Arabia during the Gulf War I ran into a Saudi C-130 pilot at Base Ops who wanted to spread the Word about Islam. He gave me some info about same. I was a poor candidate for conversion but I learned something about that which I knew little. I'm convinced that God does work in Mysterious Ways! :)

I would be amazed if it were anything more than a financial investment and an effort to raise the profile of the art gallery. Yes, Jesus is a prophet in Islam but Muslims are very much opposed to pictures or statues of prophets. Forgot to say that they do, indeed, have great respect for Mary. There's a place in Turkey where Ann Catherine Emmerich had visions of Our Lady living out her last days on earth - known as Mary's House. Turkish women go there to pray especially if they want to become pregnant.

CrewDog, I pray for amazing things every day but I'm afraid I don't think as big as you. A few conversions of people I care about would be amazing enough for me.

He cannot seem to leave anything alone. However, in this case he may have a valid point. Perhaps someone with Latin here could enlighten us on what the prayer says in that language. Certainly, God does not directly lead us into temptation.

    Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers
    (13) Lead us not into temptation.—The Greek word includes the two thoughts which are represented in English by “trials,” i.e., sufferings which test or try, and “temptations,” allurements on the side of pleasure which tend to lead us into evil. Of these the former is the dominant meaning in the language of the New Testament, and is that of which we must think here. (Comp. Matthew 26:41.) We are taught not to think of the temptation in which lust meets opportunity as that into which God leads us (James 1:13-14); there is therefore something that shocks us in the thought of asking Him not to lead us into it. But trials of another kind, persecution, spiritual conflicts, agony of body or of spirit, these may come to us as a test or as a discipline. Should we shrink from these? An ideal stoicism, a perfected faith, would say, “No, let us accept them, and leave the issue in our Father’s hands.” But those who are conscious of their weakness cannot shake off the thought that they might fail in the conflict, and the cry of that conscious weakness is therefore, “Lead us not into such trials,” even as our Lord prayed, “If it be possible, let this cup pass away from me” (Matthew 26:39). And the answer to the prayer may come either directly in actual exemption from the trial, or in “the way to escape” (1Corinthians 10:13), or in strength to bear it. It is hardly possible to read the prayer without thinking of the recent experience of “temptation” through which our Lord had passed. The memory of that trial in all its terrible aspects was still present with Him, and in His tender love for His disciples He bade them pray that they might not be led into anything so awful.

I think it were best left the way it is , but what do I know? The way it has been and understood for many centuries. Trials are by their very nature temptations, how could it be otherwise?

God is Merciful , but He is also Just.,

It is difficult to argue with these people they are so learned and wise.

    But he is the Pope....

  11. "Signs" or "warnings"??? Another one! More and more "incomings" seem to be "surprises" to those who normally keep a close watch on such things.....hmmm!

Asteroid that could’ve obliterated NYC skimmed past Earth – and NASA didn’t notice
A MASSIVE asteroid that could have destroyed New York City skimmed past Earth – and NASA had no clue.

The large space rock – dubbed 2017 VL2 – passed the planet on November 9 at an astonishing distance of just 73,000 miles, which is considered tiny in space terms.

Space boffins think that if the rock measuring between 16 and 32 metres had hit, it could’ve wiped a major city such as New York off the map.

How many Catholics would be unaware of Ellicott's definition and are consequently interpreting the prayer in the alternative sense? I suspect the very vast majority.

I would like to know how the prayer comes across in languages other than English. Perhaps the translation is less ambiguous in French, Italian, Spanish, Latin and so on. Were this to be the case, it might leave us English-speakers at a profound disadvantage.

If the same sense is conveyed in other languages as is the case in English, I would prefer the issue was left alone, on the simple basis that what worked for two millenia might actually be what was meant to be.

  13. Um....Californians must be thinking that perhaps they're a real "target"...... for some reason!!

46 EARTHQUAKES HAVE SHAKEN CALIFORNIA OVER THE PAST 24 HOURS
That is approximately twice the normal daily number, and much of the shaking has taken place in the southern part of the state

It appears that something unusual is happening along the California coastline. Over the past 24 hours, California has been hit by 46 earthquakes.

That is approximately twice the normal daily number, and much of the shaking has taken place in the southern part of the state. In recent weeks I have been writing repeatedly about the alarming seismic activity that we have been seeing along the west coast, and many believe that the potential for a megaquake is significantly higher than normal right now. Unfortunately, most residents of California are not paying any attention to what is going on at all, and so if there is a major event they will be completely blindsided by it.

When a magnitude 4.0 earthquake struck near Julian, California on Wednesday, that immediately got my attention, and that quake was followed very rapidly by several others

  16. 'temptare' refers to the stretching forth of something, so it's external. Even when it's passive in Latin, it means more "I am being offered" not "I am being tempted (in the English sense of the word)". That is, there is no sense of the will wanting the thing like there is in English, so to say that Christ was tempted, like that He wanted for an instant to do what the Devil was saying, is to say that His human and divine nature were separate, which is, of course, heresy.

I would add that my personal opinion of part of the meaning of "lead us not into temptation" in the Lord's Prayer is that Christ is telling us to ask the Father to clear the way of shiny distractions leading off the Way.

He wouldn't want to follow them, of course, but our will is so much weaker than His.

Francis seems to be blurring this distinction. Whether this is out of stupidity or malice isn't for me to say.

Good morning Padraig! Just sitting down to enjoy my morning cup of tea and catch up on the MOG posts. I saw this headline on FOX News yesterday, also they had on a Priest who was being interviewed about it.

Of course, it wouldn't be the first meddling with the direct words of Our Lord Jesus Christ by this pope. He has already, at the very least, muddied the waters of what He said regarding the indissolubility of marriage.

There is also the danger of inspiring others to assert alternative 'bad translations' of Scripture, particularly the likes of those who ascribe highest authority to tape-recorders.

The first I heard of it was on one of the British news channels. It was a programme where they review what's in the papers. The reviewer, an atheist, thought it was a great idea for those who believe in the existence of God and Satan. I started looking for the TV remote control at that stage and only heard snatches of what the other reviewer was saying. I think that the gist of it is that the English is a translation from the Latin Vulgate which is a translation of the Greek which is a translation of what Jesus said in Aramaic. In short, the meaning Jesus was conveying has been lost in translation and that he really meant that we should pray for God not to let us succumb to temptation. Maybe it is fake news but I suspect not. I'm not sure that it would be so terrible for us to pray that God protect us from giving in to temptation but isn't that really what the current "lead us not into" means because it is really asking God to lead us away from temptation. While it's not a deal breaker for me, I'm inclined towards if it ain't broke don't try to fix it.
