I think the difference is the Potter books resonate with occultic undertones whereas Lord of the Rings doesnt.
Tolkein wrote the Lord of the Rings initially as a story for his children. People read too much into Lord of the Rings. Tolkein was deeply Catholic so there may well be some resonance of his deep beliefs within the volumes. His audience was his kids.
