Its sad you mention this but you are right. Reagan would have sent troops to protect the Christian and we would have been the beacon of light to the world. Now nobody trust us and they just blow us of...as hot air.

To be fair, the 40th army wasn't comprised of well trained soldiers, they were just the closest to the border. The Soviet's withdrawal had a lot to do with the United States wanting to give them a bloody nose for perpetuating the Viet Cong. One thing about Russia, is they always have decisively acted when it comes to national interest. Right now I'm glad the jihadis are getting what they deserve, at worst I hope it'll just be status quo ante bellum. Assad was Russia's proxy to begin with, him staying around wouldn't be catastrophic, as thuggish he may be.

You robustly and honestly presented your point of view and if there was disagreement, it is in such debate that we have the best chance of coming at the truth. I agree with your assessment. Bear in mind that rule over Islamic anti-civilisation necessitates a degree of thuggishness. I am sure there are many in Iraq who look back nostalgically at the Saddam era. In fact, he was quite a hero in the West when he held back the Iranian mullahs. This changed when he invaded Kuwait. What was that about? Freedom? Civil rights? Oh, now I remember. It was all about the OIL.
