I get really curious about the mental gymnastics necessary for someone who can support or.overlook abortion. With a couple of weeks to go till the Irish abortion vote we were heading for the taxi rank after a great Saturday night out. The live band had been excellent and I'd had a few drinks. Happy out. I was approached by a woman much younger than me maybe in her 30s as I crossed the square. She said, do you mind me asking how you're going to vote? I said I'm going to vote No and so we got into it. At one point I asked her, on a line from conception to full term birth, at what point does the 'potential human'(her term) become human? Her reply stunned me. She said when the woman realises she is pregnant and accepts and wants the baby. I said we're done here. You can employ neither science nor logic to back up your argument. I shook hands and said goodnight. As I turned away she said We're going to win you know and my blood ran cold. I knew she was right about that.
