Joint Replacements

This seems a strange question, but.... I can't help wondering what Our Lady and our Triuune God think of joint replacements, now that I've been told 3 times I'm a great candidate for a new hip (chiropractor, orthopedic and another orthopedic dr)....and happen to be hosting a group pilgrimage to Europe in 14 months!

As much as I have been praying for healing of my hip, whatever the real cause and problem, whenever I have felt completely frustrated, I have had a strong sense that Our Mother has been assuring me it will heal completely. I didn't think that also meant I would end up having a hip replacement prior to my trip. For the sake of recovery, sooner the better. I would want to involve distance walking or hiking this summer as part of my PT.

Pray for my discernment on this. The last thing I wasn't is joint replacement but I can't deny the x-rays and the pain. Lots of fish oil, curcumin, collagen type II are actually helping with inflammation.

At some point, all those remedies will stop helping. I know, I have taken many of them for a long time. The joint damage can become severe enough that inflammation won't be the cause of the pain any longer. I have this to look forward to as well. The podiatrist told me last year that my joints in my feet are in such bad shape that I will likely just want to have the joints removed at some point which was a bit discouraging but it isn't like I can run anymore anyways. I think God would more than likely be all for it if it allows us to continue to serve him especially by serving others and not being shut ins.

Thank you! That is a very good clear point, so long as the replacement hardware is not imbedded with anything digital. Not that they are made as such, just one of my squeamish thoughts with joint implants. I am assured hips are easier surgeries and the recovery is easier & shorter. I suppose especially true the more personal sass and humor is part of your personality.

Stem cell treatments seems to be helping with a lot of joint issues now -- even hips. Before having any kind of surgery, it seems worth looking into as it's non-invasive. We had stem cell treatment for my father-in-laws knees, who was 93 at the time, and it may have helped. He's 97 and his knees are doing well, but he also stopped statins which are terrible for joints. The stem cells are taken from their own body. However, umbilical cord stem cells are the most advanced type of treatment from what I've read. I am NO expert.

Here's a weird one: I took my son to a naturopath after all else had failed. His tests, which were blood, saliva, and urine based, detected an excess of kryptopyrroles which are made by the liver I think. It causes a condition called pyroluria and treatment is zinc and a form of B6 called P5P. Well, I started taking P5P too and the joint problems I had in my hands went away. If I stop taking this form of B6 my fingers start locking again. According to this doc, pyroluria will be widely tested for, like Vitamin D deficiency, within the next few years.

I have actually been researching alternatives and discovered stem cell therapy, for those who are proper candidates-those without spurs. That will be part of my initial conversation with an Ortho of my 2nd opinion. Honestly, my left femur head looks fairly poor compared to the other. Grr I'm only 52! and never a runner. Just family hereditary of arthritis and hip/knee replacements. Grr, but suck it up & accept! Time feels short.

What else can we do but accept these crosses?!
Prayers for you to find the right solution for you, Joan.

    JOAN,

A doctor revealed to me that hospital replacement joints are not as good as specialty clinics. Hospitals purchase a cheaper product. You might want to consider that if you do have a replacement.
My sister had it done in a same day speciality clinic at 6:30 am and was home by 1:00 pm.
Healed wonderfully...can finally walk without pain.

So true. Since August I've been praying for a complete resolution, offering the pain up for my sisters' conversions. I certainly wasn't really believing that would turn out to be a replacement. Yet, I have had a real sense our Mother has been assuring me I WOULD have complete healing and resolution. Certainly have not thought that would mean a replacement.
    WOWZA!! Excuse me?!??
Ok, for a hip?? A specialty clinic, you say. What where in GR that takes my ins?

She may have been home that afternoon, but how was the home recovery? Mind you, when my Dad had a partial knee done, he went home that night, to his eventual regret. Overall, he acknowledges he rushed his recovery. Lesson learned as his temp caregiver. That was a few yrs ago, mom understood only so much by then.

There is a Bone & Joint Center in Holland. I would think there'd be something similar here.

Yes, if that’s a dedicated surgery center, it might be a better bet than a hospital. Check online for reviews...you might learn a lot. Often with personal reviews, you’ll learn things you never though to ask. Getting it firsthand from some folks other than prescribers is more helpful...and honest. Be discerning...as with all reviews, you can get some nonsense as well.
    Good luck!

My husband has hip pain, he us 75. He has jello every day and swears by it, if he misses a couple of days the pain comes back. I wear a magnetic bracelet for carpel tunnel, it works great.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around it. A new hip feels like a big deal. I need to pray to accept it if that's the direction I need to go.

Prayers! So many big crosses as we get a little older. It cheers me up so much that through them we save souls and shorten our Purgatory.

One time when I was younger I felt God calling me to be a priest, but I fell on my face time after time. Finally I went to Our Lady and said if heaven wanted the door opened they would have to open the door themselves and left it in her hands. The door never opened but I had great resolution by leaving things at that.

Perhaps if you do the same thing with Our Lady place things in her hands for a specific time period , say six months or a year to bring healing or some sign and if that does not happen you can then feel answered and move on to hip replacement.

    Kind of time limit things.

    Prayers at mass!

Joan I work in surgery, hips though the largest joint is by far the easiest to replace and is the least invasive to the muscle and nerves surrounding the hip. Most patients do indeed recover quicker with hip replacement because of this reason.

I must admit, it’s a hard thing to envision, but if you are in pain, it’s like a miracle to see it gone.
A younger friend in her mid forties had a genetic health issue that caused her to have two hip replacements .
She did...and I’ve heard that she’s resumed her karate classes! So, it can be life changing...for the better!

But you are younger too...just take your time and if you decide to do it, find a doctor you can have confidence in.
    Good luck!

I wondered about that. There seems to be less involved in the mechanics, which encourages a smoother outcome and recovery. I haven't done any research on the process and I can't otherwise envision how the connective tissue is manipulated. I wonder if one type of material is best over another. I know, that's for the consult.

Yet, the pain has DEFINITELY forced me to make lifestyle and activity changes. :( Putting shoes/boots and socks on is a real challenge to say nothing of the limp. Fortunately, I am able to manage OK taking 4 fish oil, 4 curcumin, 4 collagen type II, 2 glucasamine per day. As a result, I no longer need the Ibuprofen and I take Aleve only when I need to ahead of a lot of walking. With these supplements, I have not eliminated the limp but I am able to manage keeping the discomfort closer to a 4 or 5 than a 10.You are so right Beth. My next step is to consider which Ortho to consult. I was taking 800 mg of ibuprofen when I was using a cane in the early Fall.

To feel as good as new again and be able to clamor up the rocky hill in Medjugorje would certainly feel like a miracle. I have often heard that still quiet voice tell me I will have a complete recovery. I take that to be Our Mother. I take a lot to her as I can't take much to my Mom anymore.

My step dad had a hip replacement also. He is a devoted cyclist and he was no longer able to ride because of it. After his surgery and recovery he was able to resume it and said that he is just as able now as before it began giving him trouble.

Don't put it off Joan, it just isn't worth it. I took ibuprofen for many years because I refused to take pain medication and it destroyed my stomach as a result. Don't rely on it.
