I don't doubt we are in very dangerous times, but I don't see this issue much differently than other "scraps" that have occurred in this country since it's founding. No doubt we have a very messy system and at times the issue of states vs. Federal control is not clear. The 10th amendment reads: "The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people." So where it is not clear,the power belongs to the people. And it is the people who can decide of states, the federal or some sort of shared responsibility should be used in cases where it's is not explicitly given to one government or the other. In the end this is the messiness of the political process and yes, it can lead to some terrible things like wars, suppressing voting rights, and abortion. I see this political landscape and process as a symptom of the greater problem in the US- we are no longer E plurribus unum (out of many one), but unfortunately we are now not one national but groups of people who categorize each other into different camps based upon politics, religion, ethnicity, etc. I'm not sure if/how we resolve it.
Here in Georgia conservatives hold the house, senate, and the Governor's seat. A similar religious liberty bill was set to be passed late last week, and in the dead of the night someone got to them and browbeat them into submission and they tabled the bill. The Governor wouldn't even intervene. I'm sure it's the fallout from seeing the heat Indiana is getting and the gay lobby and progressives were threatening all kinds of mayhem if they passed it. And they denied God. Heaven help us.
Its pretty cut and dry in my book If you are a baker, restaurant or store. You should sell to anyone who buys your products. Their is no sin in selling to everyone. But if a certain group asks you to participate in a SPECIAL event. And that special event goes against your religious beliefs... then one has the rights to deny their services. So interesting. Much to pray about. It's true the issues are maybe not clear cut. Still that's what the Holy Spirit is out there for. Say I were a printer. There are bound to be many , many people who would come to me for work done. Would I print pornography of any kind? No I don't even have to think about it, I just would not. Would I print witch craft or New Age books? No, I don't have to think about that too long either. Would I print Communist Books? Well no I wouldn't. No, no , no. So obviously I could never be a printer. I think you know if these matters came up maybe God would grant me the grace to see more clearly.
Would I bake a cake for a homosexual wedding? One with a slogan endorsing this? No . I don't honestly think I would.
And I think this is the root of the issue. I think most reasonable people, including those who support SSM, would agree you have the right in a business transaction to decide who and how to conduct business . Unfortunately, it's politicians and those zealots who want to force their agendas that cause these issues. I thought this article in of all places the NYTs was somewhat related. To me it talks about respect for individuals. Has anyone else had any word or vision of them attacking churches here in the US? I had a vision as I stood at the doors of our church doing the SVdP collection a couple of weeks ago of tackling a terrorist as he entered our church clad in all black, firing a machine gun, and carrying bombs. It was a like watching a movie, but I wasn't asleep, the vision just came to me, I even looked behind me to see if someone was coming up the steps.
