From Totus Tuus: "On August 21, 1879, in Knock, Ireland, fifteen witnesses saw an extraordinary apparition that lasted two hours. At the center stood the Virgin Mary, radiant and serene, offering a vision of peace amid a nation struggling with hardship, poverty, and the weight of grief. To her right was St. Joseph, a mature man with gray hair and a beard, bowing respectfully in quiet devotion. On her left was St. John the Evangelist, his gaze gentle and attentive. At the center, on an altar, rested a lamb surrounded by angels, symbolizing the ultimate sacrifice and divine presence. What made this apparition remarkable was its silence. No words were spoken, yet the scene conveyed a message more powerful than any sermon: a call to faith, trust, and hope. The witnesses, ordinary parishioners, were struck not only by the sight but by the peace and reassurance it brought to their hearts. This silent tableau appeared in 1879 Ireland, a time of poverty, crop failures, and social unrest, offering profound hope and comfort to a struggling nation.The Church carefully investigated the event and formally recognized it as an approved Marian apparition in 1936, reaffirming its authenticity in later years. Since then, Knock has become a place of pilgrimage, drawing thousands from around the world seeking comfort, guidance, and a renewed connection with God. Pilgrims come not only to pray before the scene but to feel the same peace that touched those original witnesses. Our Lady of Knock, pray for us!"
May God protect Knock from the attacks of the devil to take it all over. May St Michael the Arcangel protect all Marian Shrines.
I heard a priest who was giving a retreat in knock some years ago, say in his homily that one of his group had an experience with Our Lady at a Holy Hour and that she had said the graces which were given when she appeared were still being offered. There are numerous documented records of healings of body, mind and spirit over the years, and especially in the early years. These can be viewed in the museum on the shrine grounds, mostly handwritten.
I visited Knock for the first time recently and thought it was wonderful. Definitely an Oasis of Peace. The Apparition Chapel which is attached to the gable wall of the Parish Church, where the original miraculous tableau appeared. There is a lovely representation of the scene on the wall of the Chapel. I took the attached photo when I went into the Apparition Chapel.
I worked as a guide for pilgrims at the Shrine many years ago. It was always a pleasure to do so and you never knew who you might meet!
