I've been thinking that American members of the forum probably have family, friends or acquaintances who have already been deployed or are awaiting deployment. The Iranians are rejecting any negotiations, with their spokesman pointing out that the US and Israel have already attacked them twice during negotiations, which is a reasonable point.

This war is going to play out to the bitter end, wherever that will leave us.

I go back to the Old Testament to help myself sort this all out. The Israelites are a prototype of the "People of God" aka the Catholic Church. In spite all the favors and graces they were granted they often " went off the rails" and prophets came to warn them of terrible chadtisements but more often than not they ignored the warnings and suffered grievously. Over and over. It was the suffering that brought them back to their knees. Just like the Church which has "gone to the dogs at least three times in history" as GK Chesterton said. And then he added " each time it was the dog who died".
Its a very great blessing that God is stripping away the masks from everybody. The ugly corrupt horrifying layers beneath are beyond our human ability to comprehend because they are truly from hell. In a way the world is undergoing a general illumination conscience as well as the personal illumination we will all undergo. I'm torn between the two sides on this. On the one hand, we need to give the American Bishops some slack. They're in a situation not too dissimilar to Bishops in majority Muslim countries where the beliefs of the powerful and the majority of the population are contrary to what the Church holds to be true - similar in lots of matters but dissimilar on some vital issues. The lady is right but she isn't a Bishop with responsibility for millions of Catholics in a hostile environment.

The Bishops on the committee may have a strategy for the long term interests of the Church in the US. They're in the minority on the committee and in the country so must tread softly and avoid outright confrontation. If they do have a strategy (and I'd be surprised if they don't), my criticism would be that they didn't include the Catholic lady and fill her in. Then again, she's a recent convert and it can take a while for converts, especially one with her faith background, to realise and come to terms with challenges the Church has faced in the past and will likely face in the future.

 

Yes, oil prices seem to be a bigger deal to Americans that seeing their youth go to war. Trump's son is on the board of one of the companies where big money is bet on the future price of oil.
