The "Great Monarch", "Holy Pontiff" and Era of Peace

In furtherance of my other thread on this topic, I'd like to dig a little deeper now by considering Venerable Holzhauser's Visions and Commentary separately; in tandem with the works of St. Bonaventure, to elucidate the synergies between both of their outlines of this future projected 'era'.

My post will involve some scriptural exegesis and the usage of a medieval exegetical technique known as typology which Holzhauser and Bonaventure both relied upon in part. My analysis will chiefly concern two envisioned eschatological figures of great import to the inauguration of the Era of Peace and the transition to this from our present world order, which began in 1646-48 during the Westphalian Peace Congress and consists of sovereign nation-states as opposed to the Imperial 'Christendom' of the preceding centuries.

In discussing the works of that interesting prophet, Venerable Holzhauser, whose life strangely intertwined with that of our Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, I will address firstly his book of "Visions" published in 1646 and read publicly in the presence of the Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand III and Duke Maximilian I, Elector of Bavaria, who were soon to participate in the negotiations of the Peace of Westphalia beginning that year. To this end, I am relying on a translation of his Commentary by Fr. Thomas Beykirch.

Now, Holzhauser experienced ten 'visions' and one of them is explicitly related to this topic. I produce a description of it here below:

    https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=vGtPAQAAMAAJ&pg=PA127&lpg=PA127&dq=bartholomew holzhauser visions&source=bl&ots=f-5kSsnEPG&sig=Zm-ur8YUtLFIN7KNMo_2oUT6lhc&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwj816mv7-3NAhXJLB4KHTbdDFY4ChDoAQguMAg#v=onepage&q=bartholomew holzhauser visions&f=false

"...In one of his visions, Holzhauser saw two mighty thrones, whereupon sat respectively the supreme representatives of the temporal and spiritual power, and which overshadowed the whole earth; thus realizing, on a more gigantic scale, the medieval theory of the papal umpirage and imperial advocacy...

The next two visions, have clearly reference to the future triumph which the Church, after the tribulations and anguish she has had to endure for the last three centuries, is yet destined to celebrate on earth
    ..."

To the hawk-eyed, this description of a future Monarch and Pope may remind folk of Chapters 3-4 of the Book of Zechariah which describes Joshua the High Priest and Zerubbabel, the Jewish Prince and Governor, as the two figures who would lead the Jews out of their captivity in Babylon and return them to the Promised Land under the guiding hand of the liberating Persian Monarch Cyrus the Great, where the Second Temple was to be constructed.

After King Cyrus had permitted the Jewish exiles in Babylon to return to Jerusalem, Joshua the High Priest travelled back to the Holy City along with Zerubbabel, who was appointed governor of the Persian province of Judah by King Darius I of Persia.

Then he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the LORD, and Satan standing at his right hand to accuse him. And the LORD said to Satan, “The LORD rebuke you, O Satan! The LORD who has chosen Jerusalem rebuke you! Is not this a brand plucked from the fire?”...

And the angel who talked with me came again and woke me, like a man who is awakened out of his sleep. And he said to me, “What do you see?” I said, “I see, and behold, a lampstand all of gold, with a bowl on the top of it, and seven lamps on it, with seven lips on each of the lamps that are on the top of it. And there are two olive trees by it, one on the right of the bowl and the other on its left.” And I said to the angel who talked with me, “What are these, my lord?” Then the angel who talked with me answered and said to me, “Do you not know what these are?” I said, “No, my lord.” Then he said to me, “This is the word of the LORD to Zerubbabel: Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, says the LORD of hosts. Who are you, O great mountain? Before Zerubbabel you shall become a plain. And he shall bring forward the top stone amid shouts of ‘Grace, grace to it!’”...

“These seven are the eyes of the LORD, which range through the whole earth.” Then I said to him, “What are these two olive trees on the right and the left of the lampstand?” And a second time I answered and said to him, “What are these two branches of the olive trees, which are beside the two golden pipes from which the golden oil is poured out?” He said to me, “Do you not know what these are?” I said, “No, my lord.” Then he said, “These are the two anointed ones who stand by the Lord of the whole earth.”

    (Zech 3-4)

Joshua stood for the spiritual power of the Jewish Priesthood, Zerubbabel for the temporal power.

Bonaventure and Holzhauser both developed a typological reading of Old Testament figures and biblical prophecies, which saw them as 'types' that foreshadowed similar events that would transpire in the New Testament era. Consider John the Baptist being the spiritual return of the prophet Elijah who was the former's 'type' in the Old Testament period.

Based upon this theory, they both interpreted the time we are living in at present to be the fulfilment or 'return' in the life of the Church of the Babylonian Captivity period of the biblical Jews. Here is how St. Bonaventure explains it:

"...In the sixth age three things take place - excellence of victory, excellence of teaching, and excellence of the prophetic life.... In this age there ought to come a life through an order which will possess the prophetic life. This age is double. Just as in the Lord's Passion there was first light, then darkness, and then light, so it is necessary that first there be the light of teaching and that Josiah succeed Hezekiah, after which came the tribulation of the Jews through their captivity in Babylon. It is necessary that one ruler, a defender of the Church, arise...

In the seventh age we know that these things will take place - the rebuilding of the Temple, the restoration of the city, and the granting of peace. Likewise in the coming seventh age there will be a restoration of Divine worship and a rebuilding of the city. Then the prophecy of Ezekiel will be fulfilled when the city comes down from heaven (Ezek 40); not indeed that city which is above, but that city which is below, the Church Militant which will then be conformed to the Church Triumphant as far as possible in this life..."

And now we turn to Holzhauser in his Commentary:

"...The Sixth period of the Church - the status consolationis - begins with the Holy Pope and the Powerful Emperor and terminates with the birth of Antichrist. This will be an age of solace wherein God will console His Church after the many mortifications and afflictions she had endured in the fifth period. For all nations will be brought to the unity of the true Catholic Faith.

A type of this period was the sixth age of the old world, from the deliverance of the Israelites out of the Babylonian Captivity, and the rebuilding of the City and the Temple of Jerusalem, down to the Coming of Christ. As God gladdened His people by the rebuilding of the Temple and the Holy City; as all nations and kingdoms were subjected to the Roman Empire; and Caesar Augustus, the most powerful and excellent Monarch, after vanquishing all his enemies gave peace to the world - so will God pour out upon His Church the most abundant consolations..."

So as in the Old Testament, when Joshua and King Cyrus/Prince Zerubbabel led the Jews out of Babylonian Captivity, the Church can anticipate the advent of two similar figures coming as the 'spiritual return' so to speak, of these earlier figures who will usher in an unprecedented era of Triumph and Peace for the Church, which approximates to the Second Temple era in the life of the Chosen People of the OT.

Holzhauser saw a vision of this being fulfilled in the future. He dated the beginning of the fifth period - the 'return' of the Babylonian Captivity in the life of the Church - to 1517, when Martin Luther started the Protestant Reformation that would culminate exactly 100 years later in 1617 with the outbreak of the Thirty Years War leading to Westphalia in 1646, when Holzhauser first delivered his Visions, and which inaugurated the global order we are still living in at present - prefixed upon Westphalian state sovereignty rather than Christendom and the Holy Roman Empire.

In my next post, I will consider this further...

According to both St. Bonaventure and Venerable Holzhauser, the 10th chapter of the Book of Revelation comprises special revelations respecting the so-called 'Grand Monarch' and the 'Holy Pontiff' who are destined in the divine plan to be the 'great renovators' of the Era of Peace, in the mould of Prince Zerubbabel and Joshua the High Priest in the Old Testament who are their 'types' (i.e. like Elijah was for John the Baptist).

The exegesis of the two theologians and mystics in this respect is practically identical in nature. The Seraphic Doctor, St. Bonaventure, and Ven. Holzhauser both linked the beginning of this period to the shout of the 'angel of the seven thunders' in Rev. 10. Some Protestant commentators have actually suggested that this Angel is Martin Luther heralding the Reformation!

According to the interpretations of Bonaventure and Holzhauser - which Holzhauser regarded in his case as being divinely inspired - this eschatological figure is the 'Grand Monarch,' whom Bonaventure calls 'the One Ruler and Defender of the Church', the representation in being of the temporal power of the world concentrated before Westphalia in the Holy Roman Emperor.

Then I saw another mighty angel coming down from heaven, wrapped in a cloud, with a rainbow over his head, and his face was like the sun, and his legs like pillars of fire. He had a little scroll open in his hand. And he set his right foot on the sea, and his left foot on the land, and called out with a loud voice, like a lion roaring. When he called out, the seven thunders sounded. And when the seven thunders had sounded, I was about to write, but I heard a voice from heaven saying, “Seal up what the seven thunders have said, and do not write it down.” And the angel whom I saw standing on the sea and on the land raised his right hand to heaven and swore by him who lives forever and ever, who created heaven and what is in it, the earth and what is in it, and the sea and what is in it, that there would be no more delay, but that in the days of the trumpet call to be sounded by the seventh angel, the mystery of God would be fulfilled, just as he announced to his servants the prophets.

    (Rev 10)

    Bonaventure writes:

"...No one knows how long that time of great peace will last...The seventh time or age, that of quiet, begins with the shout of the angel who "swore through Him who lives forever and ever that there would be no more time; but in the days of the seventh angel the mystery of God will be completed" (Rev 10:6-7)...It is necessary that One Ruler, a Defender of the Church, arise. After him will come the darkness of tribulations..."

    Holzhauser writes:

"...So it is said in the Tenth Chapter of Revelation v1-7....

This is the lofty description of that mighty monarch sent by God. He is described as a 'mighty angel', for none can resist him, the envoy of God. He will 'come down from heaven'; that is to say, he will be born in the bosom of the Catholic Church. The 'cloud' with which he is clothed signifies humility, with which, from youth upward and without any great parade, he walks in the simplicity of his heart. The protection of God is thereby indicated, that, on account of his humility, will encompass him.

The 'rainbow about his head' denotes that he will bring peace to the whole earth. The 'solar lustre' of his brow signifies the splendour of his glory, his honour, his holiness, his talents: so that all princes will follow his example. The 'fiery pillars' at his feet symbolize the vast extent of his power, and the fire of his religious zeal. 'Open Book' means that he will rule with justice...

The spread of the Church over all countries will take place by the instrumentality of this strong monarch, and before the destruction of the world, Christianity will be preached to all nations of the earth; as this is foretold in Matthew and Isaiah and in Micah. To this wide diffusion of Christianity allusion is made when John is obliged to measure the Temple of God (Revelation 11.v.1).

And John saw one sitting upon a cloud, with a golden crown upon his head, and a sharp sickle in his hand. This is the second vision respecting the mighty monarch; the crown is that of the [restored] holy Roman Empire; the sickle in his hand, his unconquerable army...

And another angel came out of the Temple, crying with a loud voice to him that sat upon the cloud, 'Thrust in thy sickle, and reap, because the hour is come to reap, for the harvest of the earth is ripe (Revelation 16.15). 7

This second angel of the Lord is that great and holy Pope, who, moved by God, will cry out the sanctuary of the church to that mighty monarch, to root out the tares of wickedness; for the harvest is over-ripe...Instructed by a divine revelation, the holy Pope will, by communicating the same, stir up the hearts of [other] rulers...that animated by one spirit, they will all adhere to the mighty monarch..."

William Blake drew a picture of this 'angel' from the Book of Revelation based upon the metaphorically described characteristics:

Following in the footsteps of history, it is interesting to discover that Pope Leo III was the one who crowned Charlemagne as Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire on December 25, 800, at the Old St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. Popes Leo IX and Leo X witnessed, during their pontificates, the beginnings of the East–West Schism and the Protestant Reformation, respectively. In the prophecy of Alois Irlmaier, an emperor will be crowned by a pope who went into exile.

Leo XIV could use the Augustinian approach of his order to bring an end to the Protestant schism. According to Cardinal Filoni's account, Prevost almost chose the papal name Augustine. I'm curious about what Protestants would think of that, considering their "earthly founding father" came from the order that takes its name from the Holy Father of the Church.

This is really really fascinating. PLI is the one who met with Atilla the hun and had angels behind him. I think you are onto something, we should check into all previous Pope Leos.

I have found a bunch of great stuff, it is really wort while to check into the histories of all the Pope Leos. Here is one of note for Pope Leo XII from the NIH.

On 15th of September 1824, after one year of the pontificate, he promulgated a circular that repealed the mandatory vaccination, making it optional (he was the first head of a state in Europe to take such a decision):

It remains the obligation of Doctors and Surgeons to perform it free of charge [the smallpox vaccination], to those who wish to fight against it, since this is the treatment and protection of a disease which, like all the others, they are compelled to cure”

    Pope Leo XIII and Russia

The relationship between Pope Leo XIII and Russia was characterized by attempts by the Holy See to secure greater Church rights for Catholics in the Russian Empire.

    Relationship with Alexander II
    edit
Leo XIII began his pontificate with a friendly letter to Tsar Alexander II, in which he reminded the Russian monarch of the millions of Catholics living in his empire, who would like to be good Russian subjects, provided their dignity is respected.

He appealed to the generosity of the Tsar, since Vatican-Russian relations were at a low point. The Tsar replied in an equally friendly manner and promised actions towards equal treatment of all Catholics in the empire. As during the pontificate of Pope Pius IX, this turned out to be relative, since most problems were at the local level.

    Russian language in Catholic Churches
    edit
As negotiations started, Russian demands for the use of Russian language in Catholic Churches including the Polish and Lithuanian provinces, was unacceptable to the Vatican. Pope Leo XIII threatened to appeal directly to all Catholics in Russia.

    Vacant episcopal sees
    edit
Some progress was made in the occupation of vacant Episcopal sees, but an emotional breakthrough was the Papal encyclical Quod apostolici muneris of December 28, 1878, denouncing nihilism, Marxism, and radicalism, which was dear to the Russian monarch, whose life was in danger from Far Left paramilitary forces. Repeated assassination attempts against Tsar Alexander II by the terrorist organization Narodnaya Volya caused the Pope to further escalate his warnings, which were read aloud in all Catholic Churches.

    Coronation of Alexander III
    edit
After the assassination of Alexander II, the Pope sent a high-ranking representative to the coronation of his successor. Alexander III was grateful and asked for all religious forces to unify. He asked the Pope to ensure that his bishops abstain from political agitation. In March 1894, the Pope published an encyclical to the Bishops of Poland.[1] Observers wrote that this encyclical called for the bishops to "obey to authority."[2] Relations improved further, when Pope Leo XIII, due to Italian considerations, distanced the Vatican from the Rome, Vienna, Berlin alliance and helped to facilitate a rapprochement between Paris and St. Petersburg.

    Status of Ruthenians and Poles
    edit
Meanwhile, the Ruthenians, such as the 13 Pratulin Martyrs during the forced Conversion of Chełm Eparchy, continued to face religious persecution for being members of the Eastern Catholic Churches and Rome was unable to assist. The Russian Government also protested against Polish nationalist groups allegedly using their parish churches for anti-Tsarist activism, and the Pope found himself in the same dilemma as his predecessor Pope Pius IX. He was personally attacked for being perceived as not insisting upon Pope Gregory XI's law of idiom in the face of coercive Russification and linguistic imperialism targeting the Polish language and other heritage languages like it. Meanwhile, without attacking the Pope personally, the Russian Government openly accused all members of the Catholic Church in Russia of disloyalty to the House of Romanov, largely because the Catholic hierarchy in the Russian Empire insisted upon defending their independence from control by the State.

    Relationship with Nicholas II
    edit
After the elevation of Tsar Nicolas II in 1894, Pope Leo XIII was able to reach additional agreements in 1896, which resulted in better conditions for the faithful, numerous specific dispensations and permits, and additional appointments of bishops. However, he was not able to reopen the nunciature in St. Petersburg. His pontificate ended with atmospheric improvements between the Vatican and Russia.[3] In 1899 Nicholas II and Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands used Pope Leo XIII's offices in their attempts to establish a peace conference of European nations.

Prevost is a youthful 69-year-old, so his pontificate may coincide with the Guadalupe Jubilee in 2031 (Patroness of the Americas), the Jubilee of Redemption in 2033, and the two passages of the Apophis asteroid in 2029 and 2036, respectively. All of these years carry potential prophetic symbolism, giving him a strong sense of calling to be the 'Pope of the End of the World'—though not in the geographical sense, as was the case with Bergoglio.

St. Peter then Chose the New Pope

    Ven. Elizabeth Canori-Mora (d. 1825)

"... The sky was covered with clouds so dense and dismal that it was impossible to look at them without dismay... The avenging arm of God will strike the wicked, and in his mighty power he will punish their pride and presumption. God will employ the powers of hell for the extermination of these impious and heretical persons who desire to overthrow the Church and destroy its foundation. ....

"Innumerable legions of demons shall overrun the earth and shall execute the orders of Divine Justice... Nothing on the earth shall be spared. After this frightful punishment, I saw the heavens opening, and St. Peter coming down again upon earth; he was vested in his pontifical robes, and surrounded by a great number of angels, who were chanting hymns in his honor, and they proclaimed him as sovereign of the earth. I saw also St. Paul descending upon the earth. By God's command, he traversed the earth and chained the demons, whom he brought before St. Peter, who commanded them to return into hell, whence they had come.

"Then a great light appeared upon the earth which was the sign of the reconciliation of God with man. The angels conducted before the throne of the prince of the Apostles the small flock that had remained faithful to Jesus Christ. These good and zealous Christians testified to him the most profound respect, praising God and thanking the Apostles for having delivered them from the common destruction, and for having protected the Church of Jesus Christ by not permitting her to be infected with the false maxims of the world. St. Peter then chose the new pope. The Church was again organized..."

(Prophecy of Ven. Elizabeth Canori-Mora (d. 1825) as recorded in Fr. Culleton's book The Prophets and Our Times, 1941 A.D. Imprimatur)

St Peter & St. Paul Come Down from Heaven

    Blessed Anna Maria Taigi

"After the three days of darkness, St. Peter and St. Paul, having come down from Heaven, will preach in the whole world and designate a new Pope. A great light will flash from their bodies and will settle upon the cardinal who is to become Pope. Christianity, then, will spread throughout the world.

"He is the Holy Pontiff, chosen by God to withstand the storm. At the end, he will have the gift of miracles, and his name shall be praised over the whole earth. Whole nations will come back to the Church and the face of the earth will be renewed. Russia, England, and China will come into the Church." Three Days of Darkness

    Marie-Julie Jahenny

Marie-Julie announced the three days of darkness during which the infernal powers will be loosed and will execute all the enemies of God. "The crisis will explode suddenly; the punishments will be shared by all and will succeed one another without interruption... "( January 4, 1884).

"The three days of darkness « will be on a Thusday, Friday and Saturday Days of the Most Holy Sacrament, of the Cross and Our Lady. . . .» three days less one night." 'The earth will be covered in darkness»,' Our Lady said on 20th of September 1882, 'and Hell will be loosed on earth. Thunder and lightning will cause those who have no faith or trust in My Power, to die of fear.'

"During these three days of terrifying darkness, no windows must be opened, because no one will be able to see the earth and the terrible color it will have in those days of punishment without dying at once... "

"The sky will be on fire, the earth will split... During these three days of darkness let the blessed candle be lighted everywhere, no other light will shine.... " No one outside a shelter will survive. The earth will shake as at the judgment and fear will be great. Yes, We will listen to the prayers of your friends ; not one will perish. We will need them to publish the glory of the Cross.... "(8th of December 1882).

"The candles of blessed wax alone will give light during this horrible darkness. one candle alone will be enough for the duration of this night of hell... In the homes of the wicked and blasphemers these candles will give no light."

"And Our Lady states: 'Everything will shake except the piece of furniture on which the blessed candle is burning. This will not shake. You will all gather around with the crucifix and my blessed picture. This is what will keep away this terror'

"During this darkness the devils and the wicked will take on the most hideous shapes ... red clouds like blood will move across the sky. The crash of the thunder will shake the earth and sinister lightning will streak the heavens out of season. The earth will be shaken to its foundations. The sea will rise, its roaring waves will spread over the continent ... the earth will become like a vast cemetery.'" The bodies of the wicked and the just will cover the ground."

"Three-quarters of the population of the globe will disappear. Half the population of France will be destroyed." (Marie-Julie Jahenny prophecy as reported by the Marquis de la Franquerie)

I believe there may be two popes predestined for the prophetic context of the minor tribulation: one who will face the great storm, having to leave Rome in exile due to severe persecutions against the Church, returning shortly thereafter with the heir to the French throne and crowning him emperor; while the second will only emerge after the peak of the tribulation and the chastisement of the three days of darkness. Leo XIV could be the first, inheriting part of the vocation of some of his namesake predecessors: Leo I, for attempting to prevent a foreign invasion of Rome; Leo III, for crowning a European emperor; Leo IX and Leo X, in a reverse sense, for he seeking to undo the major schisms of their pontificates; and Leo XIII, for attempting dialogue with Russia and pointing to Saint Michael.

I have always understood that the role of the Great Monarch is to restore the Church to the status of the early Church, with ecumenical councils serving as a structure for consensus and decision-making, sacramentally confirmed by the primacy of the Bishop of Rome and protected by the moderating figure of the Christian emperor. This raises the question of how Orthodox Christians would be brought together, especially considering that in many of their branches—such as in Russia—there is still a strong anti-Catholic sentiment. I wonder whether the fact that some European royal houses are connected to the Romanov lineage could be related to the emergence of a monarch who would be familiar and conciliatory to all sides.

I was reading a Brazilian website with prophecies about the rebirth of Catholicism after the Great Chastisement, and I came across an excerpt from an old Italian Catholic prophecy that speaks of the expulsion of all tyrants from the Church during the reign of the Great Lion — a title that, at the very least, matches the name of the new pope in Latin, Spanish, and Portuguese.

Perhaps Prevost is a case of prophetic predestination. According to Cardinal Filoni, he considered choosing the name Augustine, which would also have been an excellent choice. However, he ultimately turned to the figure of Leo XIII and his remarkable legacy in the Church’s social doctrine. In doing so—perhaps unconsciously—he may have brought to light a prophetic dimension of his pontificate, since his election coincided with the Feast of Saint Michael the Archangel, whose protective mission over the Church was emphasized by the last pope who bore the same name.

It also coincided with the Orthodox Church’s celebration of Saint John the Evangelist, the Lord’s beloved disciple, who embodies the unity for which the Master prayed in the Gospel that bears his name. Pope Leo XIV’s very motto—In Illo Uno UnumIn the One Christ, We Are One — seems to reflect this calling in a way that is deeply rooted in Augustinian spirituality.

Interestingly, the first Pope Leo became known in history as ''Leo Magnus,'' with Magnus being the Latin term that literally means "great.''Perhaps this Italian prophecy refers to a future pope who would revive the legacy of Saint Leo Magnus.

I recently read something interesting in that if politicians actually followed what the people wanted, we would all live according to God's Laws. It is currently those in power who hold everything back. One thing I noticed about what Grok said in terms of a nation to become converted is that there are three primary criteria.

Leadership needs to convert, population needs to convert 50%+ and the laws need to reflect this. Currently we have a block of satanic cabal leadership that blocks the will of the people at every turn. If the current leadership either converts or is removed and replaced by people of faith, the other two criteria should fall into place. So if Pope Leo cleans house, we could very well see a huge revival. We already see it at the grass roots level, but I would love to see it in authority.

It would be marvelous if our Pope would raise such a banner!
