Its like the old legends of vampires. They could never enter unless you invited them in. By wiring ourselves up to electronics via phones and computers we basically invite the monster in. What a dilemma. And yet I have been so blessed by thd many wonderful Catholic resources on line including the Forum. I guess tech is neutral in and of itself. Its what is done with it--for evil or for good.
I find immense comfort in meditating on God's gracious respect for our free will. He sets limits but as you say if we choose to push past those limits then we open the door to "vampires."

 

I'm pretty sure that the devil can't read our thoughts. He knows our sins and character flaws and is smart enough to figure out what kind od temptations are most likely to work on us, much the same as a body language expert could make an educated guess about whether a person is being deceitful. I didn't read all the document about AI but even of it can see what the eyes are transmitting to the brain, I don't believe that any machine can see into the deepest recesses of our hearts where our most sincere prayer intentions probably originate. Only God knows our hearts.

Anyway, my comment was an assurance to Luan (and to myself) that Satan's doesn't have a completely free hand. I'm confident that if I sincerely pray for a loved one to be spared a particular temptation, God will limit Satan's attempt to lure that person or at the very least give the person extra grace to resist the temptation. "Be not afraid" means what it says. Jesus gave us every reason to not cower in fear of Satan.

 

I agree that in that deepest recess, only God can enter but only if we deny entry to His enemy. The problem with humanity is that when some say yes to insanity, all the rest of us have to be exposed to the thing too. So people who have a prayerful life will be at peace, and rightly so, others will suffer horrors and be lost. So it is not a small thing to stay indifferent to this horrors just because we're ok.

Stephen Hawkins brilliance was only revealed to the world because of technology I think. Some people say that man was a total fraud, a pure invention of the world. And how would we know? The internet is full of videos extolling the virtues of all of this tech that restores hearing, sight, reads minds, translates thoughts into action to "help the handicapped or elderly" - as if the world cares one bit about these people.

The tech has gone nano and has entered into our bodies now. I won't say more as it freaks people out, but I was listening to a recent talk with Greg Dunne who talks about the incredible union he has with God as Him in me and me in Him, this union promised in Scripture that we will all have soon. Evil is trying to do the same thing, with their liquid crystals and nano technology and they will succeed in part and will mimic God's gift in many.

 

Anything good can be used for evil by the wrong hands - even Mass. Pope Francis attended a recent G8 (or is it G7?) meeting in Italy. He was there for a session on AI. I think he has an ethics document on ethics in AI development which has been accepted by most or all of the participants. Yes, I know that some of the participants are likely to have breached the terms even before they signed onto it but what should the Pope do? Should he have ignored the fact that AI is the biggest thing happening in science now? Or is it better to get in there early to try and set some kind of moral parameters to their experiments? I think he was right to attend the conference. We'll just have to deal with it as it comes, whatever "it" turns out to be. From what I can see, the more immediate threat is the use of AI in warfare. Israel uses it (with US assistance) to target Palestinians. No doubt many countries are working on some kind of robotic soldiers and unmanned aircraft. I shudder to think of the potential for evil of AI in outer space.

I don't see what we can do other than to pray. Remember that natural law is written on every human heart and God has a way of using the most unlikely people to put a stop to man's excesses.

 

I think his greatest contributions were on black hole's radiation but he isn't on the level of ,say, Max Tegmark who more or less created a TOE with this levels-of multiverse. much less Plank, Bohr, Feynman etc.
also wasn't hawkins on the epstein list? im sure he was but everyone tried to pretend it was a hoax ?
