Historically were actors playing saints in religious movies required to be catholic? or at least SFW actors?

My understanding is the one who plays Jesus is a practicing Catholic

I get where they are coming from--trying to show respect--but that can be shown without flying the flag.(n):(

I have thought so many times about trying to watch that series, and I just cannot seem to get into it. It would be lovely to immerse myself in a series like this, but knowing that they are missing a huge part of Mary's role in salvation turns me off of it. T0 be ignorant and do your best is one thing, but to deny the Truth of the Catholic Church and it's teachings to make up dialog about her and others close to Jesus is just something I really don't want to engage my imagination in. Wish it were Catholic...

Jesus came to heal the sick. He came to save the sinner not the righteous. He dined with the bottom of the barrel the prostitutes, tax collectors. He hung on the cross between two thieves. To see this little flag is a good sign, they will be healed! How else are they going to learn and be saved! They are in the hospital, Praise God.

Katfalls it is good that they are welcomed so they can learn the truth God has intended for them. God is the one we know can melt their shield on their heart and bring them into the fullness of truth. But the flag is a weapon of the movement and that should be rejected.

I watch the show. It is not perfect for sure. But it is better than 99.999% of the stuff out there you can watch. There are a few things I would change. But I believe they are trying to bring more people to Christ with it. Not trying to teach falsehoods.

To me it shows who the enemy is. The world is a battleground and it’s kinda good it’s out in the open. I’m not bothered by it. And The Chosen is a tv show not a Catholic show. It’s a great platform to discuss why we are different, believe what we do, and learn along the way.

I think the show has a responsibility to be as close to Truth as possible. It is not only depicting a bunch of historical persons, but is claiming to depict GOD HIMSELF. Jesus did love sinners, and teach them the Truth of what sin is and offered them forgiveness and salvation, but I'm pretty sure He never would have hung a Gay Pride flag in His camp during June. This TV show should NOT promote this stuff involve themselves in it in any way, as it can cause scandal, and worse, confusion to those persons that have no concept of sin and are maybe just being drawn by the Spirit to Jesus.

From what I’ve read it is an employee who is gay and on the film crew. He took it upon himself to display the flag, it was not condoned by staff. But the management did not stop it either. It is not a part of the show but can be seen in a commercial about the filming of the show. If he were my employee I would fire him. Dallas Jenkins does have an arrogant attitude so will see where this goes. Interjecting your own agenda in the workplace is not too smart. There is a big backlash going so will see where it goes. Oh the times we are living in!!

Rant continued …the last few days of The Chosen has been quite an eye opener for me. As a huge fan I am so disappointed. I was sure the producers of the show would condemn the gay pride but they are not. Sadly some of the actors have told the audience if they don’t like gay pride they can shove it. For the motto to be “Come and See” I will not be able to look at the characters of John, Little James, Thaddeus, Judas, and Mary and un see the pride flag and what it stands for. And their anti Christ remarks. Because the flag scene was published as a promotional of how they film the show they own it. Because Dallas Jenkins permits it goes against what Jesus taught. Someone mentioned it is setting the stage for the new world religion. It didn’t take long for the demons to infiltrate. I am so disappointed and can no longer be a fan of this series. It will be interesting to see how Jonathon Roumie continues. He is at a crossroads now. Will he continue as a devout believer or as a paid actor? imho

Yes to everything. There's an editorial in an Augusta Georgia newspaper that gives excellent reasons for Christians to avoid the series. Very sad when something so potentially good can go so horribly wrong.

In France at the time of Joan of Arc, her world was Catholic. She was on a mission and ordered the prostitutes out of camp, the drinking to end, and every soldier to go to the sacrament of Confession. And she was obeyed.:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO: I like that.

However, today is not a Catholic or even Christian world. I believe Dallas was clear, honest, and objective in his response. I need to keep in mind that the flag was flown in "the space" of a crew member and was not an advertisement or promotion endorsed by Dallas. Dallas is a Evangelical who has consulted with Catholic clergy to garner our viewpoint. However, The Chosen portrays Mary, Our Lady, particularly in her description of her Son's birth, in a manner which strays from what we know to be the truth. I am deeply disappointed.

But I will continue to watch the Chosen because they have brought to life and to the screen a portrayal of Christ that can help awaken a pagan world to the only One who saves.

Human beings fail us all the time. I fail the Lord and my beautiful wife at times. There are Catholic clergy who fail Christ at times. I'm included.

    Lord have Mercy.

I appreciate this thoughtful reply and assessment. You captured much more eloquently than I could how I think about this show. I emphasize “show” because it is that to me. They never said it was completely accurate portrayal of Gospels. They have been transparent that they take liberties in interpretations. But with that said, they have a Protestant minister, Jewish rabbi , and Catholic priest that provide input. And yes, there are times when the Catholic perspective is not adhered to as much as I would like and am also disappointed. But I can live with it because I see it as entertainment yet designed to deliver the Good News as best they can to a wide ranging audience.

I don’t know if anyone has watched the testimonials of people who share how the show has helped them in their faith or through a crisis. These vignettes have been very moving.

I understand that this Sunday, Dallas will be doing a live stream to address the flag issue.

I too will continue to watch. In the sea of filthy entertainment and skewed news , it’s still edifying to me.

When The Chosen first came out, I loved it. I teared up in every episode due to the incredible love Jonathon Roumie was able to portray in his representation of Christ. But as the show went on, I found I just couldn't bear how the Blessed Virgin Mary was portrayed. She's unattractive, talks way too much, seems very confident in herself... So much about her is completely opposite from what a devout Catholic would know about Mary, who is beautiful, sweet, unassuming, quiet, and dignified. I felt like I was dishonoring Mary, and therefore Jesus, by watching her be portrayed as she was in the show.

I tried again for a couple episodes in season 2, and didn't get very far. The strong element of feminism and the over-emphasis on the humanity of Jesus was too much. I also realized upon more reflection that there were a lot of subtle problems in the series, like so much emphasis on acceptance that makes people feel good.

So I'm not surprised about this rainbow flag issue. The show is so focused on making people feel good emotionally toward Jesus that hard Truths are going to take a natural place on the back burner.

As my husband and I backed out of more and more shows/movies over the last few years, our eyes were opened more and more to the desensitization that takes place when compromise is allowed in our desire for entertainment. Our entire TV actually went into the dumpster a few days ago. It's amazing how much brighter our living room looks without a big black rectangle in it! Crazy how I never noticed how ugly and darkening it was.
