If this passes, the slippery slope disappears completely into the abyss...

Canadian Senate Bill S-248 would permit involuntary euthanasia (MAiD) by advanced directive.
    Alex Schadenberg
    Executive Director, Euthanasia Prevention Coalition

Senator Pamela Wallin, who strongly supports euthanasia, known as Medical Aid in Dying (MAiD) in Canada, introduced Bill S-248: An Act to amend the Criminal Code (medical assistance in dying), to permit involuntary euthanasia (MAiD) by advanced directive when a person is not capable of consenting to be killed.

The purpose of S-248 is to amend the Criminal Code to
    (a) permit an individual whose death is not reasonably foreseeable to enter into a written arrangement to receive medical assistance in dying on a specified day if they lose the capacity to consent to receiving medical assistance in dying prior to that day; and

    (b) permit an individual who has been diagnosed with a serious and incurable illness, disease or disability to make a written declaration to waive the requirement for final consent when receiving medical assistance in dying if they lose the capacity to consent to receive medical assistance in dying, are suffering from symptoms outlined in the written declaration and have met all other relevant safeguards outlined in the Criminal Code.
When Canada legalized euthanasia (Bill C-14) in 2016 it specifically created an exception to homicide in the Criminal Code. S-248 would amend the Criminal Code by creating another exception - enabling a person to sign a contract so that, if a person loses the ability to request or consent, a medical or nurse pratitioner can still:

"administer a substance to a person to cause their death"
Bill S-248 also enables the person to include in the contract a specific date and time that they have chosen to be administered a substance to cause their death.

Senator Wallin includes a proviso. S-248 states - Advance consent invalidated:

(3.‍4) Once a person demonstrates, by words, sounds or gestures, in accordance with subsection (3.‍2), refusal to have the substance administered or resistance to its administration, medical assistance in dying can no longer be provided to them on the basis of Insertion start subsections (3.‍21) or (3.‍22) Insertion end. Section 3.4 refers to the Netherlands coffee euthanasia death whereby a woman with dementia, who had requested euthanasia in her advanced directive, resisted when the euthanasia doctor was trying to kill her. The euthanasia doctor put sedatives in her coffee, but she continued to resist. The euthanasia doctor then had the family hold her down to enable the euthanasia to be completed.
S-248 contravenes the Supreme Court of Canada Carter decision which limited MAiD to competent people.

As much as I oppose euthanasia and assisted suicide Bill C-7 already permitted most of what S-248 is trying to permit, with the exception of enabling the advanced request to be made within a 5-year time frame.

    What did Bill C-7 do?

    1. Bill C-7 removed the requirement in the law that a person’s natural death be reasonably foreseeable in order to qualify for assisted death. People who are not terminally ill can die by euthanasia.

    2. Bill C-7 permits a doctor or nurse practitioner to lethally inject a person who is incapable of consenting, if that person was previously approved for assisted death.

    3. Bill C-7 waives the ten-day waiting period if a person's natural death is deemed to be reasonably foreseeable.

    4. Bill C-7 creates a two track law. A person whose natural death is deemed to be reasonably foreseeable has no waiting period while a person whose natural death is not deemed to be reasonably foreseeable would have a 90 day waiting period before being killed by lethal injection.

    5. Bill C-7 permits euthanasia (MAiD) for people who are psychologically suffering in a manner that is intolerable to the person and that cannot be relieved in a way that the person considers acceptable. Bill C-7 permitted euthanasia for mental illness alone.
Bill S-248 and the recent push by the Quebec College of Physicians to approve infant euthanasia, undermine that a person needs to be able to request or consent to euthanasia. (Infant euthanasia proposed by Quebec College of Physicians)

    How should we respond.

Contact the Senators and contact your Member of Parliament.

Tell them that Canada has expanded MAiD beyond what was approved by the Supreme Court of Canada, Carter decision and that euthanasia without consent is too dangerous and beyond what should be considered tolerable.

Tell them that you oppose the extension of MAiD to infants, who cannot consent, and you oppose the extension of MAiD to people with dementia or other cognitive issues, who cannot consent.

Recently I found out that my family whom I was told was from France, was actually French Canadian. They left Canada and came to US in the late 1800s. Have been researching Canada since then and having met some of my still there Canadian cousins who are SO hateful toward God, the Catholic Church, and the US am horrified! The best thing my family did was leave there.

I can't help but think that the Winnipeg Statement, a document released in 1968 by the Canadian Council of Bishops, in direct defiance of Pope John VI's encyclical Humanae Vitae, merited the chastisement Canadians are facing today. At that time, our bishops counseled a form of "accompaniment" for married Catholics, who found the teaching against contraception too hard, and allowed priests to suggest that Catholics follow their conscience. The Statement reverberated around the world. Canada's action was the thin wedge that opened the doors for the culture of death to flourish. I can't remember where I read this, but farmers in Canada were encouraged to raise horses (mares) to provide hormone-laden urine for the manufacture of the Pill.
This Bill is one of the fully ripened, literally poisonous fruits of that. The "Summer of Love" media and cultural revolution was in 1967, and Humanae Vitae was promulgated in April, 1968. The Statement was released in September.
Lois, the title of this thread is very apt. Our Lady of Guadalupe, please pray for us.

It may sound crazy, but in my mind, I can easily see at some point, people being rounded up and taken away for disagreeing with all this. I'm literally considering this could happen. AED's story (from another thread) about her friend in the prison, who explained to the guard about Jesus, really struck me to the core. What will be will be; I pray for the faith to endure whatever is to come~~

I have always believed I will be brought to court one day for being Catholic.

    Just an inner intuition.

    Now I can see how.

This dear friend i spoke of in the last years of her life confided that "I cannot go through it all again. I begged the Lord." She saw this coming and she really feared enduring again. The Russians killed her whole family--martyred for their faith. She did not trust Putin or the Russians at all. Like Malachi Martin she never trusted the so-called fall of communism. She believed it was a diabolical plot to subvert the west. I believe she was given visions of the terrible state of the Church. Like Mother Angelica she was fearless in calling out errant clerics. One of the last things she said....about a year before she died in a response to a person who asked her what she thought of the pope she said "The pope?? My pope is Pope Benedict". That was all she would say. She was pressed to say more but she wouldn't. Last spring I had a powerful dream about her. I recounted it on another thread. It was more like a visitation than a dream. So vivid. She asked me if I was happy. I told her hesitantly yes but that I felt a great darkness pressing down. She nodded solemnly and said a very somber "yes" and asked me if I was getting my daily infusion. I seemed to know she meant the Holy Eucharist. All around me in the dream trees were flowering and it was so pleasant and beautiful. It was a very powerful dream. But back to your original comment about persecution I think she was warning us it was coming. She had been through it first hand. May God grant us all final perseverence.

Yes, the news is full of war, shortages, animosities, tragic weather events. But this morning in his homily, Fr. Francis was in rare form on this wonderful feast as he pointed out that our lives as saints begin in this life:

Blessed are Catholics who are poor in spirit, mourning, meek, hungry, merciful, clean of heart, peacemakers, insulted, and persecuted. To be caught up in worldly concerns is to be turned away from the face of God.

Let us be among those who survive the time of great distress; have washed our robes and made them white in the Blood of the Lamb.

We are God’s children now; what we shall be has not yet been revealed. We do know that when it is revealed we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. Everyone who has this hope based on him makes himself pure, as he is pure.

    AMEN!

    Yes. I've had similar intuition..
    They'll certainly come for us.
I mean, how can they not, given our beliefs...

Chilling. RH Benson's powerful book Lord of the World, written over 100 years ago, has a scenario where people can go to get euthanised. I remember the detail of the euthanasia machine by the bed, painted in pretty flowers. The culture of death always tries to sugar coat the horrific truth of what is done.

I was very struck by that as well. Very prescient of Msgr. Benson to intuit the possibility. The culture of death is in esence a return to pagan worship and as scripture tells us--the gods of the pagans are demons.

There is an ongoing inquiry into PM Trudeau's invocation of the Emergency Act back in February to end the trucker convoy. The PM himself testified on Friday. It turns out that back in April 2020, he was trying to invoke that Act because of the pandemic. While we were being told "two weeks to flatten the curve", our PM was behind the scenes looking to invoke what was formerly called the War Measures Act. Thankfully, the provincial premiers as a group said it was not necessary. But it's not difficult to see now why they all pushed so hard here for everyone to be vaccinated.....

This time, the PM used the excuse that the convoy and border closures were related, therefore a "national" issue. This was bogus, imo. Also coming out of the inquiry was that Gov't officials actually suggested sending in tanks to Ottawa. During the inquiry, it was said they were only joking.....riiight...

It's not difficult to imagine what would have happened if he had been successful back in 2020. And it's not, imo, unreasonable to believe that they will try to invoke the Act again. The only question is what excuse they will have, what crisis will be manufactured to allow it.

What's happening in China is horrid, but the people there, rising up as they are, shows that there's hope....for all of us....if we don't give up.
