Fiat, Before I replied to Brian's post, I found the following site which confirms a 3.9 Magnitude Earthquake for today in the area of La Palma, it was actually off shore of the Canary Islands closer to a different Canary Island not La Palma, I believe. They only state the occurrence of the one earthquake for today and not a swarm but maybe more news will follow about what is occurring there. I read on the Drudge Report this morning about the potential volcano eruption and the small swarm of earthquakes and all I could think was "Tsunami". I will go back and try to find their source.

As for the USGS, I think that it is possible that the link that Fiat posted only tracks earthquakes of 4.0 or greater in the rest of the world and 2.5 or greater for the USA. There is an island in the Canaries that should it fracture will cause the mother of all tsunamis. Depending on where the fault line break s , either east coast of USA gets the works or the west coast of Europe as far north as Ireland. Very very worrying.

I check out http://ds.iris.edu/seismon/ on a daily basis. I find it interesting to see where earthquakes occur and the frequency of the different magnitudes. If you go to that site you will see in the upper-left hand corner that the smallest circle depicted on the map represents magnitude 4. If you scroll over the image it says, "The actual min mag shown on the map is about 4.2, to get a uniform distribution." There was a rather large one today (6.7) that occurred in an unusual place - between the southern tip of Africa and Antarctica. Two days ago there was a 6.6 in the Aleutian Islands. I believe the majority of earthquakes happen out at sea. On the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre's website you can see the earthquake in the Canary Islands on this map. It shows a magnitude 3.9 at 27.99 N and 16.80 W (about 8 km west of the southern tip of Tenerife) occurring at about 05:38 UTC (6:38am local time or 1:38am EST).
Yes. Very worrying. I believe scientists have worried about that undersea shelf for a long time. I had read a few years ago that if it falls--and there is not much holding it up--the resulting tsunami will wipe out the eastern coast of the US. I did not realize it could take a path toward Europe. I suppose it depends on the angle it takes.
