I didn't put forth the premise that you can only have a say in what is good if you are wealthy. I said that you get what you pay for or what others are willing to pay for. That's as true in the NHS as it is in any system where costs are shared. There's always a panel charged with monitoring the level of expenditure. People who can afford it can and do receive treatment not approved for funding by the NHS. That doesn't mean that the NHS is a bad health service provider because it isn't although it has had its share of scare stories such as the Liverpool Care Pathway.

I find it hard to believe that GOSH would have been as relentless in their efforts to deny Charlie Gard access to the experimental treatment if Charlie's parents had been very wealthy. I have no doubt that the doctors would have been a lot more hesitant. Even if the doctors had been as adamant in opposing wealthy parents, I strongly suspect that the money men would have overruled the doctors for fear of losing the case and having costs awarded against them, and there would have been no court case. Very wealthy people don't just turn up in court with one or two expert witnesses batting for them. They are more likely to have the best legal advice money can buy and the wherewithal to find a string of experts willing to support their case. Such is the way of the world.

That other parents would have passively accepted the decision of the GOSH medical team is beside the point. Precedents are set when one or a few people stand up for themselves. The Gards tried and failed. It remains to be seen what will be the long term ramifications for society of the Gards having lost their battle to exercise their parental rights. Perhaps the GOSH medical team's motivations were above reproach and perhaps they weren't. Nobody really knows. Neither does anyone know whether Charlie would have benefited from the experimental treatment. The only certainty in this sad case is that Charlie's parents were dragged through the courts because GOSH didn't want Charlie to receive treatment not available under the NHS and their son is dead.

Nobody representing the Gards has so much as hinted that the GOSH medical team didn't provide Charlie with the best treatment available under the NHS. It is frightening that doctors, however well qualified, would be considered more loving than parents whose love for their child was never in question.

You make a very good case for socialised medical care, especially the NHS. There are also downsides. For example, while the NHS has saved very many lives over the years, abortion is also one of the services it provides and very likely euthanasia will be another of its services in the future. Whether the good is good enough to outweigh the bad is a matter of opinion.

What I find rather strange on the tragic case of little Charlie Gard, is how most posts do not seem to recognise the baby needed assistance with breathing, and a machine to enable him to do this would not have fitted through the door of his parents home.
If he was detached from the machine, he would have died on the way home. How is that kind. Why had they not thought through in advance the need to make a larger entrance to their home. Is that not what most parents would have done.

I noticed Charlie's parents had different names. This indicated to me they were in a sinful relationship. Then when the Pope got involved, the baby was Baptised a Catholic. And a global who ha was hyped up to support what the parents wanted. Yes the loss of a little child is a tragedy.

Maybe the good that can come from this tragic loss is; the parents who may be lapsed Catholic might revert in seeing the mighty power behind being part of the biggest family on earth. The Roman Catholic Church. And their poor little child will have been the one who saves their souls. He gave his little life after all.

I do not believe for one minute the medical staff were anything other than racking their brains to find a solution to this baby's medical life threatening problems. And I speak as a patient who has a number of Consultants racking their brains to try and figure out what is going on with my own health. The medical staff fight with all their might to beat these diseases, and there will sadly be more babes with incurable health problems waiting for someone to figure out the solution. In the meantime, let us trust God to enlighten those who seek to beat these serious medical conditions.

I am a nurse. They make ventilators that are very small and are designed for use at home. They could have easily switched him to one of those.

I have seen many cases where doctors have given up on a baby because they believe the baby would be a burden on society and would have a low quality of life. They have overruled the parents and have taken away the rights of parents and put them in the hands of hospital ethics committees.

Leaked George Soros Plan to Turn Ireland into a Pro-Abortion Country

DCLeaks.com revealed last year that billionaire investor George Soros has been using his Open Society Foundation (OSF) to turn Ireland – what Planned Parenthood refers to as the “jewel in the crown of the pro-life movement” – into a pro-abortion country.

Catholic News Agency (CNA) broke the news last August of Soros’s leaked strategy to use Ireland as a prototype to upend anti-abortion laws in Catholic countries around the world.

.......Ui Bhriain notes that – in addition to outright direct cash to groups and organizations – the wealthy donors are also providing funding for legal cases.

The Centre for Reproductive Rights, she explains, is using funding from the Gates and Ford Foundations for “a legal case which is going to the United Nations in Geneva, accusing Ireland of ‘torture’ because we don’t approve of our babies being killed before they are born.”

Its such a common thread which runs through all these peoples articles and rantings regarding President Trump. That being how highly they think of themselves and their world view and how contemptuously they think of anyone who does not enthusiastically support their view of the future of this world.

At least the lines are being drawn ever more clearly. It is becoming easier to see people for what they are. Unfortunately, most people seem blinded, but that is prophesied.

I found that reading the court judgment (which in my opinion is very clear and easy to read, unlike a lot of legal documents) was really helpful. It's been condensed ad summarised here, if you'd like to see it.

I don't think the judge decided that the doctors were more loving (that wasn't the remit of his investigation), it was to decide what was in the child's best interests. It was the American doctor who led to all the delays and confusion.

There are downsides to the NHS, not least as an abortion provider. It isn't perfect, but again the judge was not trying to work out if the NHS is perfect or not. That is "whatabouttery" argument. I see it as a wheat and darnel situation ( mentioned again, interestingly in yesterday's gospel).

Looking to the future, Lifesite news is worth keeping an eye on as they report that there are around 8 more very similar cases to Charlie Gard's (I think I saw one concerning a baby boy called Afie, 14 months- hospital want to pull his life support and have told parents to get lawyers) so, it will be interesting to see what happens.

Agreed... A recent example right here - all the child needed was a heart transplant, which these days is routine surgery:

I have NO DOUBT that Geo Soros is one of the most evil men on Earth ...... and gets away with it because Evil Power protects him. I have come to think that this same Evil Power protects a bunch of other "Usual Suspects". I have no other reasonable explantion considering the events unfolding daily.

HOW does he actually get away with it, Crewdog ? How ? His motives and ambition are absolutely clear for all to see, yet he keeps making in-roads. I have to conclude that it is mammon - people in high places accepting bribes to keep quiet. If you offer some people enough money, the temptation is so huge, they'll agree to anything. He is definitely one to watch. I have wondered if he is the anti-Christ.

It is much much more than money.Money corrupts, but one has to have already rejected grace and entered into grave sin to participate in Soro's level of evil. This evil did not happen over the past few years. Our Lady of Fatima spoke of it 100 years ago and even told us where it would come from. She even gave the Church the antidote (1st Saturday of Reparations and Consecration to Russia) to avoid the worst of God's punishments for mans sins. But sin had entered so deeply within the clergy and laity that we are at this point of the very powerful running the world, largely, but not exclusively through the UN. Soro's is just a big puppet in the army of Satan, but there are many other accomplices.

This is a very human, very understandable feeling, and one that I'm sure many of us share occasionally.

But foreseeing this Our Lord lovingly said this 2,000 years ago.
