Leo XIV Outlines Consistory: "Preserving Tradition While Open to Legitimate Progress"

Writing on IlGiornale.it, Nico Spuntoni confirmed that Pope Leo XIV has sent his Christmas letter to the cardinals. He thanks them for their support and describes the January 7–8 extraordinary consistory as a moment of communion and shared responsibility.

The letter identifies four topics for discussion at the consistory:
    - Renewed evangelisation in light of 'Evangelii Gaudium'.
    - The relationship between the universal Church and dioceses, as addressed in 'Praedicate Evangelium'.
    - The Synod and synodality as instruments of collaboration with the Roman Pontiff.
    - The liturgy: through in-depth theological, historical, and pastoral reflection "in order to retain sound tradition and yet remain open to legitimate progress.” This quotation comes from Sacrosanctum Concilium 23, which sets out general norms for the reform of the Mass.

Spuntoni hopes: 'This passage appears to leave open the possibility of discussion among the cardinals regarding how to address the steadily growing communities of traditionally minded faithful, particularly in countries such as Italy, the United States, and France.'

maybe I'm reading it in hopeful way but
it seems focus is not on changing doctrine, but on reaffirming authority, consultation, and Church communion while addressing divisions—especially around liturgy—in a calmer, more coherent way?

We can hope and pray. It's our duty as Catholics.

Personally, I believe that the Pope will grant greater autonomy to local churches to make decisions regarding the liturgy. This would amount to a partial and fragmented reversal of Traditionis Custodes and, in effect, a fragmentation of the liturgy itself, which could also open the door to irreverent and even sacrilegious liturgical practices. I may be completely mistaken, but this is what I think, considering that only a few months ago he called for a study commission on a more synodal approach to the liturgy.

We cant go wrong praying--Cardinal Burke I think knows that prayer is the best and only thing we can do at this point. A spiritual bouquet is a great offering.

What does Pope Leo’s own former classmate think of the Church’s current direction?

In this explosive interview, Professor William A. Thomas—a longtime colleague of the pontiff—delivers a shocking indictment: “This is not the Catholic Church.”

He explains how senior cardinals, bishops, and Vatican officials have deliberately engineered a crisis of faith, replacing Scripture and Tradition with Anglican politics, Rousseau’s sentimentalism, and emotional manipulation.

I am listening to this at the moment. I wish it was not true but I am afraid it is.

I am afraid that people are being misled and confused, having the wool pulled over their eyes by peripheral things, they have not being paying enough attention to the set agenda. The big picture. This is truly terrible and demonic. A false Church, the Ape of the Church is being constructed.

It would make more sense, imo, to just change the status of the FSSP, giving them autonomy and allowing them their own bishops.

That's what I was thinking. But then there are many other priests and lay faithful who want the Latin Mass that are outside of the FSSP and may do some things differently. The FSSP is very unified, with their own special charism and spirit of obedience to the Holy Father.

Anyway, I haven't seen anything else to verify this is even on the table, so we'll see.

Very confusing. Very good things being said like marriage only between a man and a woman. Relaxing of restrictions on Latin Mass. The fly in the ointment is all the same players continue to operate with impunity.

If I did not misunderstand, this would make it easier for many seminarians who are fond of the Mass in the older rite to begin celebrating it after their ordination. This could lead to a revival of tradition throughout the world.
