The damage was massive in the 70's and 80's and early 90's. I know personally because I was in a seminary back in 1986 - 1992. Fortunately I was in a conservative seminary (Oblates of the Virgin Mary in Boston) however the diocesan seminary that we interacted with in Boston was a big mess with a large homosexual influence and very liberal viewpoints held by many of the faculty. It was very sad to observe and have to interact with. There were many lost vocations of good men during this time and many people that should never have been in the seminary moving on to become priests. I ended up leaving the seminary for personal reasons, but I thank God every day for the formation I received in the Oblates. Their priests are great men who seek God's will and are faithful to the Church.
I do agree that we shouldn't focus on the 3rd secret for curiosity reasons however if our Blessed Mother wanted it released there is a very good reason for this. Perhaps if we new the details of the secret it would motivate most of the faithful to put pressure on the Pope to consecrate Russia to her Immaculate Heart and also motivate us to have a deeper conversion and stronger prayer life. I don't recall reading anything where Sr. Lucia said we don't need to worry about the 3rd secret. I would rather trust our Blessed Mother's reasons for wanting it revealed. She obviously is the source of the secret and I think she knows best whether it should be released or not, just as I think consecrating Russia to her Immaculate Heart should be top priority over any reason to avoid doing so out of fear that it may cause the enemies of the Church to attack her.
The only online consensus that I can seem to glean is that it was Joseph Ratzinger who wrote the commentary that accompanied the revealing of the secret. In 2000, Cardinal Ratzinger spoke as a prelate who was under and obedient to the Secretary of State 's office, which dictated the entire Third Secret party line. He was not free to deviate from that party line, and there are commentators who insist that Cardinal Ratzinger has said he considered how the whole Fatima subject was handled as one of his greatest regrets during his time at the CDF. As Pope, he was free to speak his mind. When he did on that flight to Fatima, he talked about the sins and crimes of the priesthood as one element of chastisement and that the Third Secret was still unfolding and the Church's sufferings were not over.

When ever i think of Fatima it also brings to mind the prophecy of St John Bosco where the Pope sails the ship of the church through the two pillars to safe waters. On one pillar stands Our Lady and on the other stands the Blessed Eucharist the two ways by which God is going to save mankind. Both Our Lady and Blessed Eucharist share the the same feast day on May 13th. 13th May feast day of Our Lady of Fatima. 13 May feast day of Our Lady of the Blessed Eucharist it was changed in 1930 to Our Lady of Fatima. Please help us see what in these words are "quite contrary to the Fatima message". I think the 1st and greatest commandment says the same thing.
Dont get to annoyed with me Fatima. It is just when I read these last words , that is how I felt. If Vernes messages speak of the major role given to the Blessed Virgin in ushering in the era of peace , of the importance of reparation to the Immaculate Heart , kindly direct me. I disagree Jerry. I think Charlie makes a lot of sense (as usual). I will stand with Pope St. John Paul II and Sr. Lucia on this one. I would encourage all of you to look at Charlie's blog post on the Third Secret, where the comment pasted by Jerry was first posted.
Jerry, please provide quote where St. JPII said "But the most important thing is that St. John Paul firmly said he had, indeed, performed the consecration properly". Quite the opposite took place according to the chief excorist of Rome Father Amorth who stated that JPII wanted to say Russia, but those around him said he could not, so he did the 'world' instead. Also, Russia (communism) never colapsed, it went under the radar as it re-tooled its identity and strategy as we are attesting to currently. Do not be fooled.

A similar report appeared the next day in the Italian bishops’ newspaper Avvenire, describing the Pope praying in St. Peter’s several hours after the consecration ceremony, asking Our Lady to bless "those peoples for whom You Yourself are awaiting our act of consecration and entrusting."
As for the total collapse of the Soviet Union, What does Gorbachev have to say?.... John Paul II's consecration did have an effect on the world. Grace came to the world through the consecration. When we consecrate ourselves as individuals, family members or nations to God through our Lady in a spirit of surrender and humility then God honours that consecration. It is no coincidence that after the consecration by John Paull II you had the dissolution of the Soviet Union. And in November 1987 when Gorbachev said this, he probably believed what he was saying. But a few years later, Gorbachev and Communism were gone from Russia. Of course, the left-overs of Communism remain but we should never underestimate the miracle of the fall of Communism in Russia and the Soviet block.
