Starting to learn the rosary have got a couple of apps that people on here recommended wondered if anyone had any tips for learning it off by heart I struggle as with medication I take my memory isn't that good I derive a lot of comfort from the rosary though I am very new to this but the experiences of this I find very beautiful and I feel our mother is a great comfort as well as all of you on here you make me feel so welcome and valued does anyone have any links for other prayers to our lady ? Thank you for your help
Hi Little Mary, For the rosary, we like www.comepraytherosary.org you just follow along and you dont even need beads! My favorite Marian prayer is the Memorare, this is the version I learned (from EWTN): "Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thine intercession was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my mother; to thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions: (say petition here), but in thy mercy hear and answer me, Amen." God Bless you, pcj
Purchase a small booklet that has pictures and scripture verses that go with each mystery. The pictures will help you to remember - it will take time but the Holy Spirit will help you. Prayer is the encounter of God’s thirst with ours. God thirsts that we may thirst for him. –Catechism of the Catholic Church, n. 2560
Try these Scriptural thoughts to accompany your prayer . ...THE ANNUNCIATION... 1. The Angel Gabriel was sent from God.... to a virgin betrothed to a man, named Joseph, of the House of David. The virgin's name was Mary. (Lk. 1:26) Hail Mary.... 2. The angel said to her: Rejoice 0 highly favoured daughter! The Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women. (Lk.1:28) Hail Mary.... 3 She was deeply troubled by his words, and wondered what his greeting meant.(Lk. 1:29) Hail Mary.... 4. The angel said to her: Do not fear, Mary. You have found favor with God. (Lk. 1:30) Hail Mary.... 5. You shall conceive and bear a Son and give Him the name of Jesus. (Lk. 1:31) Hail Mary.... 6. Great will be His dignity and He will be called Son of the Most High. And His reign will be without end .(Lk. 1:32-33) Hail Mary... 7. Mary said to the angel, How can this be since I do not know man?(Lk. 1:34) Hail Mary... 8. The angel answered her: The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Most High will over-shadow you.(Lk. 1:35) Hail Mary... 9. The holy offspring to be born will be called Son of God. (Lk. 1:35) Hail Mary... 10. Mary said: I am the servant of the Lord. Let it be done to me as you say. With that the angel left her.(Lk. 1:38)... http://www.ainglkiss.com/ros/jo.htm
I also have some amazing pictures coming to help meditation.Real old school ones I saw as a child . Just have to learn how to paste them here .
thank you that sounds great you are all very kind and i thank you deeply for helping me on my journey
Another thing you can try is to ask your guardian angel to help guide you in your meditations. I've found this to be very useful. It amazes me, for some reason, to think how my Guardian angel witnessed all those events. Mac's suggestions are spot on...I remember when I started saying the rosary just looking at a picture that corresponded to the decade was very useful. Peace
In the first joyful mystery using the words of the first half of the Hail Mary I become the Angel Gabriel as he reverently addresses Our Lady. I share her fear and her faith. In the second joyful mystery using the words of the first half of the Hail Mary I become Elizabeth as she Joyfully greets and welcomes Mary her cousin. I share their happiness, surprise and their anticipation. In the third joyful mystery using the words of the first half of the Hail Mary I become St Joseph, the Shepherds, the Angels the Wise Men as they sit in wonder at Mary and Her Baby. I share in their celebration and celebrity. In the fourth joyful mystery using the words of the first half of the Hail Mary I become Simeon and Anna as they meet and greet Our Lady and St Joseph and forewarn them of the calamities ahead. I share in their sense that the waiting has been well worth it and in Mary and Joseph's consternation and concern. In the fifth Joyful mystery using the words of the first half of the Hail Mary I become the priests and learned elders in the synagogue who greet the Mother of a child gone missing for three day, who stand in awe at the knowledge, wisdom and authority of this Boy before them. I share in their astonishment and in Mary and Joseph's relief, confusion and frustration. I share in their faith. This is but one way I say and apply myself to all the mysteries. There is no limit to the way the Rosary can be said, no limit to the graces its brings. In the past I have recorded myself saying all the mysteries and play it back through ear phones as I exercise on the treadmill or go for a walk or sit on the bus etc etc. Hope this helps.
I Owe Holy Holy Holy God (That's the first letters of the intro prayers; I believe, Our Father, Hail Mary x3 and Glory be.) Omnipotent Holy x 10 God Omniscient that's; Our Father 10x Hail Mary Glory be Oh my Jesus x5 Hail Holy Queen (I finish with the prayer to st MICHAEL) *********************************************** I use the associated graces as clues to remember the mysteries. We are supposed to ask for these graces and others because Our Lady says a ton of graces are left unused. We could also individually benefit from them. So ask for; HUMILITY the annunciation CHARITY/LOVE OF NEIGHBOUR the visitation POVERTY OF SPIRIT birth of Our Lord HOLY OBEDIENCE presentation at the temple ZEAL finding Jesus in the temple ************************************** SORROW FOR SINS Jesus in Gethsemane PURITY the scourge COURAGE crown of thorns PATIENCE carrying the cross PERSERVERANCE dying on the cross ************************************** FAITH the ressurection HOPE the ascension LOVE sending of the Holy Spirit GRACE OF A HAPPY DEATH Mary's assumption FINAL PENITANCE/Mary defends us before the Lord. Mary made Queen of Heaven and Earth ************************************** (Not sure about that last one though)
I have not seen associated graces for the new mysteries/acts of Jesus instituted by JPII, but lets try and figure it out; Jesus changes water to wine, (Mary directs, "Do whatever he says), maybe HOLY OBEDIENCE. Jesus is Baptised by John the Baptist, God says, "This is my Son in whom I am well pleased." maybe the grace is HOLY SUBMISSION/ SURRENDER, OR GRACE OF A GOOD CONFESSION/CONVERSION. The configuration. maybe the grace is HOLY DETACHMENT. Teaching the Kingdom. Could the grace be HOLY UNDERSTANDING. Jesus institutes the eucharist. Maybe this involves the grace of HOLY THANKSGIVING. ...just wild guesses mind you.
Hi Misericordia Good guesses, good graces. The "new" Luminous mysteries are 1. Baptism of Our Lord 2. Wedding feast of Cana 3. Transfiguration 4. Proclamation of the Kingdom 5. Institution of the Eucharist All these contain a command or word that must be obeyed - "If you love me keep my word." 1. Listen to Him 2. Do what He tells you. 3. Keep this to yourself (for now) Wait for the Holy Spirit. 4. Repent and believe 5. Do this in memory of me. And loads more but your graces and guesses are fine. Nice contemplation. I believe is no one way to say the Rosary except with reverence and due attention. That's the hard one I find. I get distracted. I feel bad about this. I know what it feels like when you are talking to someone on the phone and you just know they are doing something else ----especially if they make an irrelevant response to a question. I prayed the luminous mysteries this morning for Padraig's old neighbor and for his sister. Will continue this later.
Back again. Thank you Misericordia for all your Graces. Holy Detachment caught especially caught my eye. I am aware of areas in my life where this is sorely lacking. So thank you for this renewal. I use my imagination when I say the Rosary. I bring the people who I am praying for into the picture. For example I bring the souls in Purgatory into the cooling and refreshing River Jordan with Jesus when he was baptised. I bring them into the company of Mary and Jesus as have a good time at their friends wedding - give them a break form the relentless hard time. I bring them into the Kingdom of God transformed with Jesus as he talks to Moses and Elijah during his Transfiguration, try to ease their isolation and give them something to look forward to. I bring them into the realization that their time in Purgatory is nearly over as the nearness of the kingdom is proclaimed. I bring them into the ultimate fulfillment of the promise of Jesus that He will be with us forever, that every tear will be wiped away and that the new life in heaven will eradicate the memory of the bad stuff - like a mother who has just gone through a difficult labour forgets the pain (at least for a moment) when her child, her new life, is placed in her arms. I do not know if I am doing the right thing or if this type of prayer does them any good. I suspect they just want to do their time and move on. But my heart is in the right place and "God looks to the intention of the heart." This is just an example. It changes all the time depending on the circumstances. I think I ran out of time and steam yesterday and think I did not pray a rosary. I was so tired I cant really remember. No excuse I could have turned off the rubbishy telly. But I had decided to reward my hard work with a bit of recreational entertainment. I was not struck down but I did not feel right. I need to detach myself from the telly...and from money.
It takes a lot of time but I use these meditations, http://www.rosary-center.org/howto.htm#loaded just click on each set of mysteries above They are from the booklet "Praying the Rosary without Distractions".
h LOL configuration, ha, story of my life. And it wasn't even 'wine time'. I always thought it was in cronological order, wedding first, but should go back and relearn it. Hey, we all get distracted, remember Lucia at Fatima said they were just saying the first word of the mysteries to get done quicker till the angel or Our Lady corrected them. I need detachment from other peoples opinions. But, I would happily help you out in the money dept.
That's a very Jesuit meditation Joe. very cool. I threw away my tv a long time ago but am now addicted to free movies on youtube. Internet goes by this next first friday. I'll check in here at the library a couple of times a week.
AAfter rereading the statements that go along with the new mysteries, I am thinking discernment and surrender might be some of the graces. Everybody chime in!
