Unfortunately, Iran has denied any knowledge of talks. The most cynical suggest he was only playing the market to make a quick killing for himself and his friends. Oil is reported this morning as having dropped back to $86\barrel. Maybe it was a bet on this.

If the cynical are correct, this still represents a gigantic blow to what little is left of the credibility of Donald Trump. He will have lied to the whole world or else he has lost history's biggest game of 'chicken'.

Please God, the Iranians are just being reserved and cautious. Wouldn’t blame them for that.

There may be talks but not with any of the official spokesmen of Iran. The US/Israeli alliance (Netanyahu seems to be running the show now) may have found someone in Iran willing to co-operate, similar to the situation in Venezuela where the Vice President appears to have sold out Maduro.

Daniel Davis showed a clip of a US Admiral telling the people of Tehran to stay indoors during the attack and wait there until Trump comes to save them. That was about 20 minutes before Trump made his announcement, giving the impression that the Admiral hadn't been informed.

If they have done some shady deal, it could halt the strikes on the critical infrastructure but it won't bring peace to Iran. Israel wants Iran completely destroyed soon because Turkey is next on the agenda. Trump wants control of Iran's oil and gas and Cuba is in his sights.

Control of the oil and gas will give Trump more leverage over India. An American and a group of Ukrainians were arrested in India under suspicion of spying and helping train anti-India dissident groups in Myanmar. The American's name is Van Dyke. He runs some kind if non-profit that seems to be a front for a mercenary outfit. He has a track record of helping "freedom fighters" in such places as Libya, Syria and Ukraine and probably other countries where the US wants regime change: https://www.theweek.in/news/india/2...n-myanmar-targeting-india-nia-probe-says.html

The USA is in a precarious situation. I am pleased with the attempts of President Trump to utilize tariffs in an attempt to stabilize America's financial position. Unfortunately, our skyrocketing debt is an irreversible plague that will sink the ship. BRICS will be the immediate threat to our stability since it provides an exit ramp for countries still holding significant amounts of dollars. On the whole, I grieve for my country.

This Iranian war will engender even more instability for the USA in that we have expended huge amounts of money in a war that we have not decisively won; at best it is a draw. The mid-terms will reveal the full extent of damage. The House and Senate will probably fall into the hands of the Democrats and the growing signs of Trump's reduced mental acuity threatens the Republican hold on the White House in 2028.

How many of us who are residents of other nations, are losing confidence in their national regimes?

We live in times of both religious and political decline. It is up to those of us who have placed ourselves under the Kingship of Christ and the Mantle of Mary to discern wisely and confidently, to pray the Daily Rosary, to frequently participate in the Holy Sacrifice, to feed on the Bread of Life, and to practice the Corporal and Spiritual works of Mercy. The Church is God's Refuge for mankind.

On the bookshelf to my left is a quote of the Little Flower, a reminder to each of us: The world's thy ship and not thy home!

Be wise; we are sailing through the stormy waters of the Strait of Magellan!

The war isn't over. I don't think that anyone doubts that the US could win a war against Iran. They could win the war but that won't bring peace. The plan seems to be to break it into ethnic statelets always at odds with each other while the US/Israel controls the part with the most valuable natural resources and the Strait of Hormuz. The part controlled by the US will probably have a vassal government with or without a Shah and a large US military base - the usual protection racket.

Lots of Europeans don't like their government but not a lot of them dislike their countrymen so much that they would buy into the US offering them the carpet bombing version of freedom and democracy. We're already vassals. Post Christian Europe is nothing to be proud of. Then again, I'm beginning to understand why Pope Francis didn't rush back to Argentina. Here's the newly installed US loyalist in that country: https://www.chabad.org/news/article...Benjamin-Netanyahu-a-Picture-of-the-Rebbe.htm
The article doesn't mention seances to get advice from the spirit of his dead dog. Maybe that was just a rumour.

Best to place our trust in God. There will always be a Caesar to rule over us in this world but we're just passing through.

I would certainly doubt that the US can win this war. They haven't won a war since WWII and the Russians did most of the heavy lifting. They lost the Vietnam War, at a time when they were very much more powerful and Iran is a far more formidable foe. They are fighting a war with weapons that have become obsolete and are acutely short of essential metals for further weapons production. That 200 billion dollars they want is no use if there's nothing to buy, but the MIC will gladly pocket it.

For a long time now, the US has occupied weak countries by terrorising them by bombing their civilians. That seems to be their only modus operandi. This time, they have chosen an opponent who can return attacks with interest. The only thing the US can do is cause a total destruction of the Middle East and that, as you say, won't bring peace for anybody.

These 'talks' mentioned by Trump don't seem to be confirmed by anybody. If they're just another lie, it might be because he has 'chickened out', realising he was heading for a catastrophe with no winners and everybody losing.

Who knows where we go now.

The US can win but only if China and Russia don't get actively involved. Trump has already threatened using "unthinkable weapons" meaning nukes. Probably the only thing stopping them using nukes is that it gives the go-ahead for other countries like Russia to use nukes. They have no scruples. Their first target were a religious leader, a hospital and a school. They used the double-tap tactic on the school - the same tactic the Israelis use all the time in Palestine. That's how the priest was killed in Lebanon when he went to help a couple of parishioners whose house had been bombed. People like Scott Ritter say that it must have been an AI error because no US serviceman would do such a thing as incinerating schoolchildren. But that attack on Iran had been planned for a long time and the building had been a school for about 10 years. It wasn't a hasty strike in the middle of a raging battle. It was a well planned, surprise attack to terrorise the Iranian people. People with those morals won't think twice about using nukes, and the US has plenty of them - enough to kill every Iranian who, unlike the Israelis, don't have bomb shelters.

They will also get help from other countries. Britain and Germany are already helping. The Argentinian weirdo has already offered to send troops. Iran has a huge non-Persian population. Offhand, I can think of Afghans, Azeris, Kurds and Armenians. There could be other ethnic groups. The right offer coupled with enough terror could produce all the cannon fodder the US wants. And don't think for a minute that the US wouldn't convince the Western world that using nukes is justified. Plenty would be horrified but not enough to make a difference. Come the 4th July celebrations, Americans won't care when their President boasts about beating Iran and Cuba no matter how he went about it. On the 250th anniversary of the essential nation, we'll see how many prominent Catholics will be cheering their slaughter of Amalek on behalf of the chosen. I know that sounds cynical but, sadly, that's the state of so-called Christian civilisation these days and it won't surprise me in the least to see Bishops leading the cheers.

Larry Johnson says that the ships carrying the bulk of US troops won't arrive until Friday. Trump could be waiting until they arrive. He may also be waiting until the markets close on Friday. We'll find out soon enough.

God help those people, and may God forgive us for what we have become.

Yes, he could do all those things, but if Iran goes down like that, it will take the Middle East oil with it and there'll then be nothing left for a pariah US to celebrate, as the economic ramifications will take it down with the rest of the world.

I think Iran has nuclear warheads already-the fatwah is gone and they're well capable of making them, as their uranium is far enough enriched. Even without nukes, they have plenty of material for a dirty bomb that would render a small country like Israel uninhabitable for decades. So, the US doesn't have a monopoly on Armageddon.

I think Iran would be reluctant to use such weapons, but if they were nuked, they might change their minds (and nukes probably would not inhibit their ability to react, with their nuclear material and most of their missiles (including unstoppable ultrasonics) safely underground. I would also hope the US/Israel would think twice, if only because they like their money too much.

I wouldn't worry about Britain, Germany or Argentina-these are joke armies, now, even if they could be delivered to a fighting zone. The former two have expended most of their weaponry in a pointless war against Russia, as for the latter...Pursuing war long distance has become very difficult; playing at home has become a very great advantage, as shown with both US carriers limping away.

The Afghans have been supportive of Iran and the Azeris and Kurds won't be keen on fighting their own from Iran. The Pakistanis would be the only big danger, but China has a huge influence there.

    DeGaulle, you said:

What you say here is key, DeGaulle, but Trump has worked himself and his country into a corner. He's frustrated because he is searching for a way of saving face for the United States, but also because of his ego. Therein lies the rub.

    Lord have Mercy!

A folly as ill-judged as the war itself.

Have these people come to mistake Hollywood movies with reality? At least, they had the element of surprise with the beginning of the war. Iran has a huge army, with thousands of anti-personnel drones, a heavily fortified coast and impassable terrain, with few likely options for invasion; and they will know exactly where these forces decide to attack. This will be a bloody fiasco, with huge casualties for the attackers. Why don’t they ask the Israelis to go in, they’ve proven themselves such brave and competent soldiers in Gaza?

I hope you're right and that sensible people in the US can get it into Trump's head that he's not the Messiah and neither are any of his relatives. No civilised person makes jokes about the violent death of human beings.

Gotta hand it to the Iranians that they're still standing after decades of persecution. Please God, let them survive and be converted by peaceful means.

I know it's a few pages back, but I wanted to inject a point of clarity regarding Bishop Barron. The Twitter post you all were discussing was from January back when Iranian citizens were protesting. It was not intended to be a justification or approval of the current war. I've been off of X since early January so haven't checked recently but wanted to clarify for the sake of his reputation.

I have found Bishop Barron to be a very solid teacher and defender of the faith. The only weakness I've really seen on social media is that he's very quick to criticize policies and positions by politicians on the left that contradict church teaching but will often stay silent when Trump says or does things that are probably equally worthy of being called out. It can give the perception of bias even if that's not the intent. I would love to see our Bishops call out all politicians from all stripes when the policies don't align with the faith, so the faithful and non believers alike can understand how the church transcends politics.
