I am so sorry I had just no idea that storm is so terrible. What a monster! Prayers today and right through the weekend all my Masses. Prayers for all.
Thank you, Padraig. I began praying the Pieta book storm prayer that you posted. We expect it to start around 7 pm Saturday and end on Monday. My husband and I should be able to get to Vigil Mass on Saturday before the storm. I'm hoping and praying for that. Right now, I'm keeping everyone in prayer.
Yesterday it was 35 below zero windchill here when I did my outside work. I have to laugh when I saw that Dallas weather girl say it will be 30 degrees...freezing for 72 hours! 30 degrees means it feels 65 degrees warmer than it does here. 30 degrees feels like spring. They think 6 inches to a foot of snow is the end of the world. It happens all the time. And tomorrow they are saying it may be 45-60 below zero windchill when I am working outside. Just bundle up and be safe.
When I was in the Arctic it was a general practice to keep water running when the heating elements for the water pipes would be non-functional. However, if the ground freezes it could become problematic to your septic system to keep water running. However if the storm is only going to last for a few days I doubt it will be an issue as it takes time for the ground to freeze.
Did anyone ever hear that it is a good idea to keep a window open for a few minutes in the cold to drop the humidity? That it actually greatly warms the house? It seems to be a very old trick. I was just wondering.
Impressive. Our lows will be in the single digits where I am. Not sure what the wind chill will be. But it's not really the temperature everyone is worried about...it's the ice. Down here, when the power lines and trees become coated in ice, the lines go down all over the place and huge numbers of people lose power. The last time it happened in 2021, a lot of people died. Our homes aren't built for sustained below freezing temps without power very long, and many people, especially out here in the country where I am, are too poor for generators. And then more people die sliding around the freeways in the ice. We probably are wimps, but our infrastructure is built for heat, not cold. We're fairly good at surviving the humid, 110 degree summers.
I'm really not a fan of these newfangled aerobic septic systems. They have so many moving parts and our brand new one has malfunctioned a few times already. One really heavy rain tripped the breaker box, causing the tanks to back up with water because the sprinkler heads couldn't come on. And we didn't hear the alarm going off because...the breaker was tripped. Lol.
I do this with vehicles in winter when they get a coating of ice on the inside before the car warms up. I put the fan on full, open the front windows and the ice on the windshield evaporates quickly.
Like Maine. Up here we just wear layers muffled up and soldier on. However ice is a different situation. We had an ice storm in '98 that was horrendous. Some people went 3 weeks without power. We had lots of emergency prep and our faithful King Kineo wood cook stove in The kitchen so we made out fine but what a terrible time it was. Trees in our back woods were falling sounding like cannon fire. The streets looked like a war zone with trees down and wires down. Please God protect everyone in the path of this storm!
Can everyone here please pray for my area (Virginia) too. We’re expecting to be snowed in for a few days. I’ll have to go to the vigil Mass Saturday night if I can.
This video didn't address homes with aerobic septic systems, so I'm still not sure. I've always dripped faucets during freezes my whole life, but the manual that came with this house said not to do it because the slow drip through the septic line may freeze and cause that line to burst, which would be a much more costly fix than a pipe under the house. A freeze in the septic line seems pretty scary...because then the water will back up into the house.
Well then, isn't it great! Where human ingenuity lacks, we get to go directly to God! Matthew 7:7 Ask, and it will be given you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 8 For every one who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.
