This issue whether he had his hand on the Bible or not is pharisaical nonsense fomented mostly by atheists. An Oath to God is an Oath. When one asserts that one is telling the Truth upon Holy Scripture, one is verbally expressing one's belief in that Narrative and staking your truthfulness upon it. Whether one physically touches a Bible in the process is neither here nor there. That Bible exists. The Truth expressed by the Bible would continue to exist, even if all physical copies were destroyed and Oaths upon its Truth would still be perfectly valid. The Oath has been made.

The important thing now is that he keep it. Obama did touch the Bible and I've little doubt that Biden did, but did they obey? What's worse, a petty error in protocol or a hypocritical oath that the taker has no intention of keeping?

So far, Trump is playing a blinder. He is doing exactly what he said he would and which the majority of the American people wished him to do. The proof of this Oath will be in how he fulfills it.

Let your yes be yes and your no be no!

Maybe I am wrong but swearing on the Bible seems to be such a protestant thing. I personally would refuse to do so and just give my word.

Yes. It struck me as I was typing my post that it can come very close to idolatry.

It took centuries for the Church to compile the Bible as a whole. Were the Christians before that not to be trusted?

Anyone can swear in the most exemplary, most clearly obvious way upon the Bible. It in no way guarantees that the person is sincere. We mere men cannot know the state of mind of the person at that very moment who is taking the Oath. Only God Himself and the oath-taker know that. Our opinions will be better-informed as we come to realise the extent by which the person who has taken the Oath lives up to his committments, but still only God and the oath-taker will know the Truth.

Catholics used to swear on relics -

"Sometime before January 1078, Manasses I of Gournay, Archbishop of Reims (ca. 1069–1080) ignored a summons to come to Poitiers. Hugh of Die, the papal legate for France, was angered by this and deposed the archbishop. In response, Manasses traveled to Rome and appealed directly to the pope, Gregory VII. The pope restored Manasses to his office on the condition that he swear on the relics of St Peter that he would respond to all future summonses. By uttering the words while touching the bones of the first pope, Manasses would have increased the gravitas of his words. According to Christian belief, relics formed a direct conduit to the living saint who dwelled in heaven. A man might swear on a particular saint’s remains that he was telling the truth, that he was willing to accept the responsibility of a given office, or to show his fidelity to a particular leader. Relics authenticated and witnessed declarations. The idea of swearing “on” something predates Christianity and is related to Old Testament ideas of testifying by placing one’s hand on one’s testes. This refers to the original covenant of circumcision" ('Touching Parchment" - Kathryn M. Rudy, 2023)

Harold Godwinson swore an oath on holy relics in Bayeux Cathedral to support William the Conqueror's claim to the English throne. The oath is depicted in the Bayeux Tapestry.

Still, if one swore on the relics of St Peter, even if they were physically unavailable, would it not be equally demanding of one's truthfulness? Is it not the saintliness of St Peter that one is really calling upon as witness, of which his relics only stand as a representation?

  7. it is not wrong to wonder why he didn't follow protocol. Maybe too old? I clearly touched a nerve with the nonAmericans about this topic. Hopefully he doesn't roll out a new vax, a new ID system to keep the illegals at bay. They have a lot of tricks up their sleeve. Why not address, in your wisdom, why the swearing oath was done under the freemason mural?

President Trump mentioned in his speech that God saved him, in order that he might be given an opportunity to help reverse the anti-civilisational policies recently imposed on his country. Such a thought on his part suggests to me a belief in a Personal, Interventionist God as opposed to what I understand are the Deist beliefs of the Masons.

Perhaps you might elucidate who you think here is claiming to post "in...wisdom"?

I was under the impression that we all consider ourselves very much in the dark, but hoping for the best. I haven't noticed anyone claiming to have any special insights.

One thing about Donald Trump I think people were and are (myself included) inclined to vastly underestimate him. I watched him signing those Presidential Orders whilst fielding questions. He did both with such ease, perfect multi tasking. Not only this but he had a perfect handle on a wide variety of complex topics and kept hitting the ball into the beyond.

Brilliant performance for a much younger man but for someone his age, superb. Also he is a master with social media. Letting Tik Tok of the hook was a master stroke.

I am beginning to think he has some kind of genius IQ. I am not his biggest fan , but you have to hand it to him. Anyway he is always endlessly entertaining. I love this. Try to think of any World Leader quite like him? Maybe Vladimir Putin of Russia. Giorgia Maloni of Italy, Victor Orban of Hungary. But very few. He's quite a case .

I know nothing about style but loved Melania's hat. Is it true she bawled and cussed Kamala out? :D:D

I'd love to have been there, such fun. Trump is never, ever boring, bless him.##

Anyway give the guy a chance.

  12. It was impressive and, most importantly to me, spontaneous. Most of the press conferences from the government are theater with the questions submitted beforehand.

It was a little concerning that he insisted that Spain is in BRICS (laughable, actually) but he must have still been thinking of Brazil.

Such a breath of fresh air.

True, no guarantee. Joe Biden took the Oath with his hand on the Bible. I pray that President Trump will live up to his Oath, and I pray for his conversion.

We must all pray for our conversion. We really all our sinners.

    We must endlessly convert.

As St Francis used to say to the little brothers.

    'Brothers let us begin today!'

Fun is such a good sign. Kamala had as much fun as a dead pocupine.

I’ve always thought that swearing on the Protestant Bible made the whole thing kind of irrelevant. If someone asked me to swear on a Protestant Bible I’d refuse.

Whatever the matter, Marie-Julie Jahenney said that democracy is from the devil.

My ability to multitask is limited to praying the rosary out loud while thinking about all kinds of things in my mind o_O

The women at work used to boast that women could multi task and men could not.:) I always used to get my own back when they asked me to lift something heavy.:):)

Trump can certainly multi task though. Amazing. He also seems to have a great memory.

That seems to be the case. And as you said - his personality is entertaining. At least as long as you don't have to deal with him...

More good than bad. I drink from time to time, honestly, not drinking doesn't impress me. But I can only assume that for an Irish man it's hard to imagine going without an occasional glass of whiskey.
