This does not surprise me. The first "TC" didn't appear to put the brakes on TLM communities. I would think, sadly enough, that squashing the TLM communities would be a priority for those advancing the Synodal game plan. Lord have Mercy!

I could be wrong, but I believe the USA and France are the prime movers for the TLM. As I've stated before, my bishop has set up three TLM parishes in the diocese near the 3 main urban centers and has celebrated the TLM himself. We have under 400,000 Catholics so I don't believe we're necessarily on anyone's radar at this time.

Lord have Mercy! Safe Under Mary's Mantle!

Letter #23, 2023 Wednesday, January 18: "No secrets"

I just received a fascinating letter, which I publish below.

I took my distance a bit yesterday (see this link) from the "rumors" in Rome that Pope Francis may soon issue a new decree further restricting the celebration of the old Mass.

    Then, I received this letter.

It begins: "As we both know, there are no real 'secrets' in Rome."

Then, essentially, the letter-writer tells me that the "rumor" does in fact contain a truth: that there is a draft Vatican document which would further restrict the celebration of the old Mass.

The letter is from a priest who confided in me that "an archbishop in the States has seen this document."

The archbishop, he continues, "confirmed to a priest friend of mine (who is a person of true integrity and would not casually spread rumor), that it does indeed contain what some have guessed at — a further suppression of the TLM..."

I replied to the letter-writer, confirmed his identity, and know that the letter is not a prank, but a serious communication.

I regard it as credible. (If I did not, I would not publish it here.)

The news is "second-hand" because it comes from another priest, who learned of this from an archbishop, but I am persuaded that the "chain of witness" is not so fragile as to discredit the report.

    ***

Why publish it now, in this form?

Because it seems important that Catholics who love the old Mass, and who feel and believe that it comforts and supports them spiritually, and helps them to conform their minds and souls more closely to Christ, and so to better work out their salvation, should be aware of and informed about what the leaders of the Church are planning with regard to the old Mass.

For many thousands, this is not a "game of rites" played by hierarchs, but a profoundly serious spiritual matter that affects their souls and the souls of many, including their children, intimately.

Benedict XVI made strong arguments in favor of his 2007 decision to permit and, in a sense, to embrace the old Mass as a legitimate, honored part of our tradition.

His arguments remain powerful and persuasive, 15 years later... in spite of his departure from this world on December 31. —RM

The text of an email received this morning, January 18, 2023:

    Hi Robert,

As we both know, there are no real “secrets” in Rome.

So without revealing the identity, I can tell you, that an archbishop in the States has seen this document about which rumors abound, and confirmed to a priest friend of mine (who is a person of true integrity and would not casually spread rumor), that it does indeed contain what some have guessed at—a further suppression of the TLM, with an exception for religious orders who solely celebrate privately (no parish churches), and some possible further clarifications for the FSP.

It was “found necessary” to issue this second letter, because of the lack of implementation of Pope Francis’ motu proprioby a good number of bishops around the world (by using Canon 87, etc.)

It is scheduled for release sometime in April or May, and would carry the “weight” of an Apostolic Exhortation (to match that of St Paul VI formally establishing the New Rite).

It would, effectively, take away from the bishops, any further say or exceptions in the matter.

If issued, I believe, it will push the TLM [Traditional Latin Mass] “underground” and further add to the ranks of the Pius X Society (which has already grown by three times since the issuance of the motu proprio by Pope Francis).

    This will not end well.

The TLM will survive — whether any Catholics will continue to go to a further watered-down Novus Ordo (which is also supposed to be a part of this document), will remain to be seen — attendance at weekly Sunday Mass by Catholics is currently at 12% in the United States (in most dioceses); it is 2.5% in the Netherlands.

If I learn of any further information on all of this, I will be sure to send you an update.

God bless and thank you for all you do.

—From a priest who belongs to one of the traditional orders

A Novus Ordo mass, watered down till it’s invalid, would go hand in hand with a global suppression of the TLM.

If this leads to a further reduction in Mass attendance, Pope Francis will only be delighted. This is his objective, as it seems to have been for the progressives in the Church since they first began the collapse of vocations and mass attendance decades ago. I think ultimately he not only wishes to suppress the TLM, but Catholicism itself, in order to replace it with something new, artificial and thus meaningless.

    Come, Lord Jesus.

The Novus Ordo is so diluted it can't afford to be watered down any more. We would have no known option of a TLM, underground or otherwise, near me, so if the words of Consecration are removed we will be deprived of the Mass. Will we still be obliged under pain of mortal sin to attend this potential travesty?

It strikes me now that the entire controversy over the Latin Mass might only have been a smokescreen, a sleight-of-hand for the real event-the complete abolition of all Masses. Most of us were sympathising with the advocates of the TLM while the stilletto was perched behind our ribs.

Pope Francis or anyone else can only do this if God permits it. He may decide to call the Holy Father before the Judgement Seat rather than permit this.

I think he might want to decentralize the rite of the Holy Mass in the name of synodality, making liturgical inculturation free, and in view of that, he thinks that churches with the Tridentine rite would become a refuge in the midst of so many sacrilegious liturgies.

Padraig, you just posted a thread from Jean Philippe Marie which speaks to this.
It’s a very thought provoking message which gives much hope. God is still on the Throne. We can still offer our prayers and sacrifices to stand in the gap. In fact, that is our duty as Catholics.
We truly have no idea what God is going to do.
I heard this saying today: “What the enemy meant for evil, God will turn for the good.”

Yes, it is all in God's Hands as it is always in the Hands of the Good God. Apart from prayer, there really isn't much else we can do. He is the Pope, the Vicar of Christ on Earth. The Cardinals and Bishops might be able to do something, I expect. I hope and trust the good ones are doing their best.

But we as ordinary lay folk are left with the mission of prayer.

If there were anything else we could do I would do it. But I can't think of anything. My heart goes out most especially to the poor , poor priests and seminarians who may be affected by this directly, to the good lay folk too. But I am sure they are praying like crazy and that God and His Blessed Mother know better than anyone else what is going down and are taking care of it all.

As to the future, well that is in God's Hands too.

    As Padre Pio always said,

    'Pray, hope and don't worry.'

What terrible, terrible, terrible times we are living through when we have to live in fear of what stunt a Roman Pontiff is going to pull next.

"See Consolata, the enemy will make every effort to shake your blind faith in Me. But you must never forget that I am and love to be always kind and merciful. Understand my heart Consolata; understand my love, and never permit the enemy to gain entrance into your soul, even for an instant, with a thought of a lack of confidence in Me. Believe Me, I am solely and always kind; I am solely an always like a parent to you! So, imitate the children who at every little scratch of the finger, run at once to mother to have it bandaged. You should always do the same and remember that I will always cancel out and repair your imperfections and faults, just as a mother will always bandage the child's finger, whether it is really hurt or only seems so in his imagination. And if the child were to really hurt his arm, or his head, how tenderly and affectionately would he be cared for and bandaged by the mother! Well, I do this very same thing with regard to your soul when you fall, even though I may do so in silence. Do You understand Consolata? Therefore, never, never, never have even a shadow of doubt; a lack of confidence wounds My heart to the quick, and makes Me suffer."

Well, I'm sure the Orthodox would be mighty grateful of him because it would surely bring a lot of people to their door. The other thing about this is how would something like this affect the reunification efforts between them that the Vatican has been pursuing. I can't imagine it would go far toward winning them over.
I don't get the impression this has been thought through very well.

Of course, but on the other hand, we've been saying that God will not allow the next atrocity, until He does. Pope Francis is the inevitable outcome of six decades of antinomianism and disrespect. It seems quite plausible that God will permit these consequences to play out to their logical conclusion. He promised us that the Gates of Hell would not prevail; this is not to say Hell will not temporarily avail of the opportunities that have been handed to it.

We must get out of our head the idea that any of these things are being done with any thought of such ideas as their impact upon reunifying West and East. Such an outcome is one ultimately desired for the good of the Church. The intention is to demolish. Everything. In that sense, they have been thinking through very well.

If Pope Francis does his worst and apparently knackers the Mass, we must keep an eye on the various regular Eucharistic miracles that take place throughout the world. If the miracles still continued, what a consolation for the faithful and what a kick in the teeth for the progressives; it would make very clear Who's in charge. If the miracles stop, we'd know for sure the Mass had become invalid.
