Get to confession while we can everyone. Our parish priest warned us at mass this weekend and now Fr Goring is telling us all as well. I went to our parish mission talk this morning and the visiting priest Fr Brian Mullady was hearing confession afterward. The line was very large. Thankfully he will also be hearing confessions tomorrow and Wednesday after the mission as well.
Yes, best go while we can. I wouldn't put it past the European Bishops Conference to suspend personal Confession and replace it with Confession by 'phone, text or online. The Germans probably have an app for that. First Friday and Saturday next weekend.
It will be interesting to see how the virus fares in hot Saudi Arabia and Egypt. We are hping for a rest for it over the spring and summer. But if it spreads in these very hot climates..well. ....
C'mon global warming! Actually, I am really ready for some heat. The winter months with all the storms play havoc on me.
Here in WA state the speculation is percolating! As usual, Komonews offers lots of speculation and virtually no verifiable facts. They will tell you who its OK to blame though. Researchers at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and the University of Washington on Sunday said they had evidence the virus may have been circulating in the state for up to six weeks undetected — a finding that, if true, could mean hundreds of undiagnosed cases in the area. https://komonews.com/news/local/officials-seek-to-calm-public-as-new-us-virus-cases-reported Genetic clues hint at hidden virus cases in Washington state SEATTLE (AP) — The coronavirus may have been circulating for weeks undetected in Washington state, a preliminary finding that could mean hundreds of undiagnosed cases, researchers said Sunday after analyzing genetic samples from two people. Washington state, home of the nation’s first confirmed infection, saw the nation's first death from the virus this weekend. State and local authorities stepped up testing for the illness as the number of new cases grew nationwide, with new infections announced in Illinois, Rhode Island and Washington state. Authorities in the Seattle area said two more people had been diagnosed with the COVID-19 virus, both men in their 60s who were in critical condition. Those cases brought the numbers to six in Seattle's King County. A man in his 50s died in Washington on Saturday and health officials said 50 more people in a nursing facility in Kirkland, Washington, are sick and being tested for the virus. Elsewhere, authorities announced Sunday a third case in Illinois and Rhode Island's first case as worried Americans swarmed stores to stock up on basic goods such as bottled water, canned foods and toilet paper. The hospitalized patient in Rhode Island is a man in his 40s who had traveled to Italy in February. As the fallout continued, Vice President Mike Pence and Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar sought to reassure the American public that the federal government is working to make sure state and local authorities are able to test for the virus. Both said during a round of TV talk show appearances Sunday that thousands more testing kits had been distributed to state and local officials, with thousands more to come. “They should know we have the best public health system in the world looking out for them,” Azar said, adding that additional cases will be reported and the overall risk to Americans is low. As the cases ticked up, some Americans stocked up on basic supplies — particularly in areas with diagnosed cases — and began to take note of the impact on daily life. Stores such as Costco sold out of toilet paper, bottled water and hand sanitizer outside Portland, Oregon, where a case was announced Friday. Sports games and practices were canceled into the coming school week. Some churches said they would not offer communion because of fears of viral spread. As Americans prepared, researchers at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and the University of Washington on Sunday said they had evidence the virus may have been circulating in the state for up to six weeks undetected — a finding that, if true, could mean hundreds of undiagnosed cases in the area. They posted their research online, but it was not published in a scientific journal or reviewed by other scientists. Trevor Bedford, an associate professor who announced the preliminary findings on the virus in Washington state, said on Twitter late Saturday that genetic similarities between the state's first case on Jan. 20 and a case announced Friday indicated the newer case may have descended from the earlier one. The Jan. 20 case was the first known case in the U.S. “I believe we're facing an already substantial outbreak in Washington State that was not detected until now due to narrow case definition requiring direct travel to China,” he said on Twitter. Bedford did not immediately reply to an e-mail requesting an interview Sunday. Scientists not affiliated with the research said the results did not necessarily surprise them and pointed out that for many people — especially younger, healthier ones — the symptoms are not much worse than a flu or bad cold. “We think that this has a pretty high rate of mild symptoms and can be asymptomatic. The symptoms are pretty non-specific and testing criteria has been pretty strict, so those combinations of factors means that it easily could have been circulating for a bit without us knowing,” said Justin Lessler, an associate professor of epidemiology at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Dr. Adam Lauring of University of Michigan called the findings “high quality work” from scientists who've done similar work with the flu virus for years. “They show their data and they show their work,” Lauring said. “It’s more than a series of tweets" because the researchers back up what they found with data that they've shared online. "If there’s something wrong, someone will find it.” Dr. Carlos del Rio of Emory University School of Medicine said the findings are from respected researchers in genomic sequencing and they make sense because of the geographic proximity of the two cases. “This is a good time to reinforce the things we all should be doing to stop the spread of flu. Wash your hands. Don’t touch your face. If you have a cold, stay home ... It’s a good time to remind ourselves of that," he said. Pence, named by the president to be the point-person overseeing the government's response, said more than 15,000 virus testing kits had been released over the weekend. And, the administration is working with a commercial provider to distribute 50,000 more, he said. The vice president said testing was among the first issues raised by governors he's spoken with so far. Several states have begun their own testing, including Washington state, Oregon and Illinois. “We're leaning into it,” Pence said. Azar said more than 3,600 people already have been tested for coronavirus and the capability exists to test 75,000 people. He forecast a “radical expansion of that” in the coming weeks. Pence and Azar spoke a day after President Donald Trump approved new restrictions on international travel to prevent the spread within the U.S. of the new virus, which originated in China. There are now more than 80,000 cases worldwide and about 3,000 deaths. Two Americans are now known to have died of the virus, one in Washington state and one in China. The new U.S. travel restrictions apply to Iran, although travel there by Americans already is severely limited, as well as heavily affected regions of Italy and South Korea. Trump tweeted Sunday that any travelers from those countries will be screened when they arrive in the U.S. The number of known coronavirus cases in the U.S. had reached 70 as of Sunday. Trump said Saturday at a White House news conference that he was thinking about closing the southern border with Mexico as a precaution. Azar said Sunday that Mexico has few coronavirus cases and that it would take a dramatic change in the circumstances there to prompt serious consideration of a border shutdown. The president, Azar said, "was trying to say everything's on the table.” “We will take whatever measures are appropriate and necessary to protect the American people, but we don’t forecast doing that any time soon,” he said of closing the border. Pence noted that an infectious disease expert is joining an existing White House coronavirus task force on Monday. Last week, Pence announced the addition of Debbie Birx, a State Department ambassador-at-large and medical doctor who is the administration's global HIV/AIDS response coordinator, to the virus panel. Despite calls by Trump and Pence for political unity in the face of the viral threat, the issue has become mired in the partisan rancor in Washington, with both Republicans and Democrats accusing each other of mining the issue for political gain. Trump, at a political rally last week, accused Democrats of “politicizing” the issue and said their criticism of his handling of the public health challenge was their new “hoax.” At the White House on Saturday, Trump said he was not trying to minimize the threat from the virus. “Again, the hoax was used in respect to Democrats and what they were saying," he said Saturday. Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden, who emerged victorious Saturday night from South Carolina's primary, criticized the administration over the availability of testing kits. Biden also panned the administration's decision to have political appointees Pence and Azar, neither of whom are scientists by training, appear on the Sunday shows, instead of an expert like Dr. Anthony Fauci, the National Institutes of Health infectious disease chief. Biden claimed the administration doesn't have testing kits. Pence and Azar said thousands of kits had been distributed. Azar said he didn't know what Biden was talking about when the former vice president said testing kits didn't exist. Azar said the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had developed a lab test for coronavirus with “historic speed.” Pence was interviewed on CNN's “State of the Union” and Azar commented on “Fox News Sunday," CBS' “Face the Nation” and ABC's “This Week.” Biden commented on CNN.
There is a report on ZeroHedge, a site whose accuracy is variable, that the Chinese are now preparing for a massive locust infestation. The article makes the biblical connection with the plagues of Egypt.
Thank you for posting this, an upset young woman who was instructed to get up off her knees and take Communion in the hand this past week contacted me last night to find out if there was anything in writing that she could use to defend herself. I said I'd look for something. So this was perfect timing!
This is very keen and droll satire. Very funny in a gallows humor sort of way. And he does look like Bernie.
I read a few posts on this thread about COVID-19 possibly mutating. I don't think I heard that in the news but there are a few different strains of the corona virus in existence prior to the discovery of COVID-19 which were not known to be fatal. I am aware of this because my physician recently told me that he had two different strains of the corona virus in the past few years, two of the non-lethal ones. This is from wikipedia: Coronaviruses are a group of viruses that cause diseases in mammals and birds. In humans, coronaviruses cause respiratory tract infections that are typically mild, such as the common cold, though rarer forms such as SARS, MERS, and COVID-19 can be lethal. Symptoms vary in other species: in chickens, they cause an upper respiratory tract disease, while in cows and pigs they cause diarrhea. There are yet to be vaccines or antiviral drugs to prevent or treat human coronavirus infections. Coronaviruses comprise the subfamily .Orthocoronavirinae in the family Coronaviridae, in the order Nidovirales.[5][6] They are enveloped viruses with a positive-sense single-stranded RNA genome and a nucleocapsid of helical symmetry. The genome size of coronaviruses ranges from approximately 27 to 34 kilobases, the largest among known RNA viruses.[7] The name coronavirus is derived from the Latin corona, meaning "crown" or "halo", which refers to the characteristic appearance of the virus particles (virions): they have a fringe reminiscent of a crown or of a solar corona. ... Discovery Coronaviruses were first discovered in the 1960s.[8] The earliest ones discovered were infectious bronchitis virus in chickens and two viruses from the nasal cavities of human patients with the common cold that were subsequently named human coronavirus 229E and human coronavirus OC43.[9] Other members of this family have since been identified, including SARS-CoV in 2003, HCoV NL63 in 2004, HKU1 in 2005, MERS-CoV in 2012, and SARS-CoV-2 (formerly known as 2019-nCoV) in 2019. Most of these have involved serious respiratory tract infections. ... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coronavirus I hope this helps some.
It won't be funny if anyone here dies from the virus. I'm surprised it has lasted two days on youtube. Our President isn't really a Bernie lookalike. England's Jeremy Corbyn could be Bernie's brother. In fairness to our President and to Mr. Corbyn, neither of them owned three houses while guilt tripping people with only one house about the plight of the homeless. You Americans really do everything on a larger scale. Even your some more equal than other types are more champagne than smoked salmon.
I think that it might be interesting to post the following at least once a week and see how some of these details are changing over time. I hope that I remember to post it here every Tuesday, my first post with this info was last Tuesday 2/25. https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/ Padraig, I think that various health authorities have already ruled out that COVID-19 will die off the way that SARS did in warm weather. And if you go to that link just above it has caused some deaths in countries like Australia which are in their summer season currently. I wish it was the case that the warm weather was going to help but I am not sure that it will.
Francis Tested Negative For Coronavirus Pope Francis tested negative for the coronavirus after falling ill last week, according to the Roman newspaper Il Messaggero. After spending last Wednesday primarily outdoors, Francis came down with a cough, chills and other flu-like symptoms. He was tested for the disease which has spread from China throughout the world, including to Italy, but the results were negative. The Pope cut back on his schedule while sick, giving up a weeklong retreat but keeping his private meetings, according to Il Messaggero. Even so, with coronavirus fears in Italy -- and the fact Pope Francis had never canceled so many public events since assuming the papacy -- the Pope's absence from public caused concerned speculation. At a White House briefing yesterday, U.S. Vice President Mike Pence told the media that there are 43 total cases of coronavirus in the United States with six total deaths so far, but that the risk to Americans from the disease was still not major. "Despite today's sad news, let's be clear. The risk to the American people of the coronavirus remains low according to all of the experts we are working with across the government," Pence said. Markets across the world have tumbled in the past week over fears that the disease could stunt the global economy, but stocks did rebound Monday over hopes that central banks across the world would take action to shield the economy from any negative effects of the coronavirus. https://www.foxnews.com/world/pope-francis-tests-negative-for-coronavirus-after-catching-cold-report
