I don't think there'll be much holiday making this summer. It will be a killer for the tourist industry.
The school teacher trying to lecture the Forum. Well dont lecture me or Richard67. The term fear porn is fine by me.
I received an email this week from our military connected health insurance to register for a webinar to discuss procedures for acquiring healthcare services overseas. Japan, and Korea were specifically mentioned. This is a first. We have never before received a notification of this nature. They may be bracing for severe outbreaks.
But since the virus originated in Asia and is mostly concentrated there of course most of the fatalities are Asian. How could it be otherwise? Let's see what happens in places like Iran and Italy. We will know shortly one way or the other. The term , 'Fear porn', puzzles me. Why such a forceful turn of phrase? Either it effects non Asians or it does not. I hope it doesn't. I see no reason why it wouldn't, but we will see...and we will see very, very shortly.
It may be fine by you, but offensive to others. Your comment comes across as arrogant, and uncaring. We all have different opinions, but this is a Catholic forum and we should respectful.
I thought that the experts expect the virus to be on the wane by Summer. But isn't Shrove Tuesday a big festival in Venice? That's next Tuesday - too late for holiday cancellations. The Italians will need to pull out all the stops to keep the virus out of Venice. Lots of cruise ships stop there.
There are so many unknowns with this virus Dolours. People put a lot of Faith in two things about it. Firstly that there will be a vaccine. But there are problems with this. Vaccines work on stimulating the persons anti bodies. But there is quite some evidence that by doing this we would actually make the body more vulnerable to second wave attack. Secondly there is no real evidence that good weather will kill of the virus as it does the flu. . The temp in Iran at the moment is 14 C and its spreading like wild fire there. The Temp in Tokio currently is also 14C and its going like crazy there too. I don't think we would get up to 14c in Ireland till late Spring. Also we have no natural herd immunity to this thing, which give it huge force and power..
Fortunately we don't have any direct air connections with China so we shouldn't be hit too hard unless it takes hold in the UK or the rest of Europe. Someone who works at the airport told me that people are still travelling to China - probably via London. I hope they are being checked out by the medics when they return. Do you know whether there is any medical screening at Heathrow for passengers from China and other SE Asian countries? The Venice Carnival is in full swing. Imagine the nightmare of a virus carrier mixing with crowds like this: https://www.carnivaland.net/venice-carnival/
The evidence is that the virus is asymptomatic for the first period so screening does not work unless it is full blown. The temp checks that you see all the time are pretty well useless. Also its not only in China now but several other countries.
I suppose that it will reach us if they don't get a grip on it. Maybe we should be stocking up on antibiotics but we can't buy them over the counter here like in Spain. Some countries seem to be managing it better than others. Singapore is getting lots of praise. I'm amazed at the WHO singing China's praises when their negligence has led to this mess. I wonder whether our GPs have been told to keep an eye out for it here. And how would they be able to tell the difference between the symptoms of coronavirus and the regular 'flu?
Clearly the US is quietly setting protocols in place. My husband had NPR on the car radio yesterday(National "Pagan"Radio) and the interviewer was asking the CDC official if DJT was doing anything. The snark was barely disguised. The CDC expert went on to examples of how deeply engaged the president is and many meetings and updates go on with the White House. The interviewer abruptly (to my mind)ended the interview.
The unknowns are what make it scary. The best epidemiologists are uncertain how this will proceed.we are in God's Hands
All good questions Dolours. Chris Martinson and Dr John Campbell are two good sources of info. On you tube. The doctor is in the UK so maybe more to the point for tyour whole geographic area.
Coronovirus is just getting started. Let's see if your thinking is wishful thinking or 'deep fake news' is. My bet is the media is still underplaying the global epidemic of this virus, because truth coming out of China is like truth coming out of hell. It is now spread far and wide killing thousands now and untold to come. More cases becoming known in the US every day throughout the country. Time will tell. To early to tell.
I've watched most of their videos posted on this thread but not much of it sinks into my head. One of them talks about epidemics in various countries but an epidemic to me would be people dropping like flies and that doesn't seem to be the case outside of China. I'm thinking of GP surgeries here where all the patients sit in a room waiting their turn to see the doctor. In 'flu season, there's a good chance of coming out sicker than you went in. One of the UK cases was a GP. I saw picture of the surgery where he worked being decontaminated, and I think that they had to trace all the patients who had attended the clinic. Two people in Italy have died. One in Padua and one south of Milan. According to this report, Masses have been cancelled in the town near Milan: https://www.reuters.com/article/us-china-health-italy-idUSKCN20G0CQ The expert on this German TV report says that if the spread of the virus can't be controlled in Italy, we have the definition for a pandemic. It's a very recent interview (uploaded today) yet they are talking about 17 cases in Italy whereas the more recent Reuters report (also today but a half an hour ago) says there are 27 cases in Italy: If the virus stays on hard surfaces, I don't know how they could curtail it in Italy where public transport is widely used.
You are right Dours. There is no way to get one"s head around it. I'd say lay in provisions for a long shut down and get to Mass and the sacrsment of penance while we can. This is every bit as spiritual as it is physical. May God save us from unprovided death. I am praying every day for those who are dying Unprepared. We do not have easy access to antibiotics either. Sigh. Trusting Our Lord for all these possibilities.
