The Church has always been a Church of sinners. If this wasn't so, Our Lord wouldn't have needed to die for us on The Cross. Nevertheless, while many sin, as has always been the case, it is on a whole other level to deliberately, gleefully and unrepentantly raise one's hand in support of murdering the most innocent. If we are to confine our Remnant to the sanctified alone, it is going to be a small one indeed.

'I wouldn't like to attribute sin in this matter' - Fr D'Arcy reacts to Bishop's confession comments

Update - 6.26pm: A Catholic priest has reacted to Bishop Doran's belief that people who voted yes in Friday's referendum committed a sin and should attend confession.

Bishop Doran from Elphin told Sean O'Rourke on RTE Radio One this morning: "If you voted yes knowing and intending that abortion would be the outcome, then you should consider coming to confession, where you would be received with the same compassion that is shown to any other penitent."

He was then asked if he considered a yes vote a sin, his answer was: "If they knew and intended abortion as the outcome, yes I believe so."

Fr Brian D'Arcy joined Sarah McInerney on RTE Radio One's Drivetime this afternoon and said that people must follow their conscience and vote conscientiously, whether it was to vote yes or no.

He said: "I wouldn't like to attribute sin in this matter, at all. It's the wrong language for this because this isn't an issue about Church law at all.

"This is an issue about how the State is attempting to treat all its people in an emerging way, in an emerging republic in an emerging world."

"Each of us is having to struggle to find a way of accepting what is right for yourself, while also allowing what you couldn't allow for yourself to be allowed for others who might view life and its ethics and morality in a different way.

"That's very important to accept and encourage, and certainly not condemn.

The language of sin is not one I would use in this, at all. - Fr Brian D'Arcy

He stated that Catholic teaching wasn't up for discussion in this issue and added that the Catholic Church has a position on abortion, but nobody was asking the Catholic Church to change their teaching.

Fr D'Arcy also said that he was against adding the 8th Amendment to the Constitution in 1983.

    I feel sick.

Ah, Fr. Brian D'Arcy. The quintessential Fr. Trendy. Pastor to the stars. When avowed atheist and Catholic apostate Terry Wogan died, Fr. D'Arcy said that if Terry isn't in Heaven, he (Fr. D'Arcy) has been preaching the wrong faith. Terry, of course, was rich and famous. Maybe he bought his way into Heaven and is spending eternity with the God whose existence he denied. We can but pray that he is. Fr. D'Arcy, on the other hand, had no doubt whatsoever.

Fr Brian D'Arcy makes it pointless to be Catholic. You aren't required to believe anything, do anything, or hold anything as truth

Oh Maryrose I am not surprised. You and the other heroes literally poured your heart's blood into this campaign to save babies. I am thousand miles away and I feel utterly undone by this terrible turn of events. Also down with a respiratory flu! Strange. A real Nasty one. I'm offering it up. I am praying for you and all who fought so valiantly. Mother Teresa always said God does not call us to be successful but to be faithful. You and all the heroes are faithful!

Was always seeking approval for himself ahead of any other priority, in my memory. The archetypical 'Father Trendy'. How can anyone assert with a straight face that that which nobody seems to be denying is an abortion referendum, and nothing else but, has nothing to do with Church law?

Maybe those Bishops will wake up to the fact that, since the apostasy started in the priesthood, the re-evangelisation needs to start there. That Bishop gave a speech in Knock saying that supporting abortion is a sin. I was in Knock the Monday before the referendum and the priest talked about abortion but I didn't hear him mention the word "sin". He did say that we need to follow our conscience and that he wasn't going to tell us how to vote. Later the same day, also in Knock, a priest did give the Catholic position on abortion but ended with this appeal "don't let Pope Francis down". Last time I checked the Nicene Creed, it didn't mention Pope Francis but it did say something about the Holy Spirit being the Lord and Giver of Life. Pope Francis, on the other hand, appears to think that promoting abortion can make a person great so long as they know something about Africa.

You faithful Catholics of Erin have gone through hell this week. To feel dejected is understandable! Let us tell Jesus Crucified that we love him and pledge to remain faithful!:)

I was pondering today that it very well may be that voting for abortion might actually be worse than getting an abortion. A person who gets an abortion may be under duress. They also may only commit the sin once since it is proven it can have awful psychological (not to mention spiritual) consequences.

The person who votes for abortion most likely is under no duress. They make the choice clearly and with much time for clear headed thought. It is possible they may then be held accountable for a part in every abortion that flows from their actions. That could be countless millions. Just as it is a mortal sin to participate in making it possible for someone to procure an abortion by paying for it, driving them to it, etc. It would also follow that it is a very grave sin to give them access to an abortion in the first place by voting for it.

Luke 17:2 comes to mind: It would be better for him if a millstone were put around his neck and he be thrown into the sea than for him to cause one of these little ones to sin.

I usually look at the headlines on the online version of the Irish Independent, which is free and I will not pay for a newspaper. This morning, before I clicked away in disgust, I came across a headline suggesting that an abortion will cost €300. There's the price of a baby's life for you.

A very insightful post. As far as I recall the ground opened up and swallowed the backsliders. This time round we are promised, 'Fire from heaven', according to the Marian Apparitions.

I am very, very surprised God has not acted radically up to this point. But my own sense of things is that things are going to get very, very much worse.

I saw a wonderful t shirt with the slogan on it, from Scripture,

'But as for me and my family we will follow the Lord".

“And Joshua said unto all the people [of Israel], … choose you this day whom ye will serve; … but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord” (Josh. 24:2, 15).
