Having had 30+ years of liberal social justice pastors, I can declare abortion is not the least of their concerns. It doesn't pass the test of a 'do-gooder' that they can pat their back for. Sad, but true.
Your being harsh doesn't really matter. What matters is innocent babies about to be slaughtered in our name in hospitals funded by our taxes. This abomination didn't come as the result of a groundswell of demand for it. The push for it started with the elite - "intellectuals" and moneyed people - almost all of whom were products of a Catholic education and many of whom products of the most elite Catholic private schools. It took decades for them to change the will of the people but, coming from a class which knows all the various ways to swing a cat, they got there in the end. Don't forget, Julia, that the apostasy in Ireland didn't start in the pews. It started in the priesthood and religious institutions, spreading outwards from there. It spread to the educational institutions, starting at the higher level and eventually working its way through all the arteries of society. Most of the "Catholics" who voted for abortion very likely don't realise that supporting abortion in any way is a grave sin. The prevailing attitude here is "I wouldn't do it myself but I won't stop someone else doing it". They don't know, Julia, how wrong that is because very likely nobody ever told them. The same people who tell us that it's ok to murder a pre-born child would be appalled at even the slightest suggestion of the death penalty for a murdering rapist for fear that an innocent man might be executed. And the same people will usher in euthanasia. There's more than enough blame to go around but I think it rather disingenuous to suggest that the average person casting a ballot is in the same league as a very well informed politician campaigning for evil and calling it good. Come August, all those voters will have their choice ratified by no less a personage than the Vicar of Christ when he back stabs the remnant in Ireland just has he did in Italy. Sure, he'll be careful to take the bad look off it by including the odd pro-lifer in the photo ops but there will be enough convoluted language to reassure all the death cultists that the Pope is with them. I agree with you wholeheartedly Dolours. The years of poor or absent Catechism instructing the last couple of generations, not to mention the silence from the pulpit, has left Catholic families at a loss to pass on the traditional Faith; without a shadow of a doubt. IMHO And I expect the Holy Father to be more concerned with the climate change spiel than the disintegrating Church on his visit to Ireland. I did come across an article somewhere from a Priest who said, at our judgement, we will be held accountable for not making it our business to find out the Truth while on earth, so not learning the Ten Commandments will be a blot on our copy books instead of an excuse for breaking the Laws of God.
I saw some interviews on TV, and was shocked to hear Oxford and Cambridge universities among others here in the UK were funding Irish students to get over to Ireland and vote in support of ridding Ireland of the 8th Amendment. I think there was something similar done at the time of the homosexual so called marriage thing as well.
