Saint Tikhon, BTW, was a naturalized American citizen. He was sent by the Holy Synod in Moscow in 1898 to minister as a bishop to the Orthodox believers in America. He stayed in America until 1907. When the Bolsheviks took over in 1917 the Holy Synod voted to dissolve and re-establish the Patriarchate. Metropolitan Tikhon was chosen by lot to be the first "Patriarch of Moscow and of all Russia" of the Russian Orthodox Church in 300 years. He died 7 April 1924
