I can't deny it, as the topic is so subjective, and I accept your bona fides. From my own experience, unpleasant memories tend to be the very ones I can't forget. A common theme in popular culture is that of memories coming back to haunt people, generally in the context that they would wish to suppress them, if they could. What troubles me is the impossibility of objective proof and the unquestionable opportunity the concept provides for the unscrupulous to make dishonest claims. The bishop in this case may be guilty of the crime alleged, but if he is innocent, how on earth is he to defend himself against an invented 'suppressed' memory?
At least it makes null the Planned Parenthood propaganda that opposing abortion represents a 'war on women', since, by their own logic, such identities cannot be determined by the mere anatomical appearance of those who obtain abortions. In this (very insane) brave, new, satanic world it is as likely as not that those aborting their babies are men!
Post-modernists apparently think (I use this latter word advisedly) that such things as 'truth', 'logic' and 'reason' are nothing in themselves, but exist only as cultural constructs. Some, for example, claim that reason and logic are merely weapons invented by successful civilisations to oppress less successful ones. It is a current manifestation of the heresy of Nominalism. The lunatics that make these claims assert that nothing is really true or reasonable in itself, but is only so by virtue of society willing it to be. The rest of us are to accept that an exception can be made for the claim itself. In other words, we must accept the statement that "there is no such thing as absolute truth...and that's the absolute truth".
The whole area of so-called suppressed memories is certainly a murky one, I won't deny that. I know that this phenomenon became a major problem with the use of certain dubious psychoanalytical and therapeutic techniques that came into vogue during the 80s and 90s, with devastating consequences for what turned out to be innocent people. I know of a family that was completely destroyed by this when the daughter, under some kind of regression therapy, resurrected "suppressed" memories of being sexually abused by her father. It turned out to be all a fabrication by an over-enthusiastic regression therapist. But then, why should a supposed suppressed memory be any more difficult to defend oneself against than a fully conscious memory, or indeed a recent event in which there are no other witnesses? It all boils down to 'your word against mine'. I have no doubt that sexual abuse is a traumatic experience for children and in the case of childhood trauma, memory works in very mysterious ways. I've done a lot of research on this. I also do not think that suppressing a memory is synonymous with forgetting, or that unpleasant memories are synonymous with traumatic experiences. We're dealing with distinct phenomena here. But certainly it is very murky water to try and navigate.
A suppressed memory might be no more difficult to defend oneself against than a fully conscious one. If the suppressed memory, a concept I personally cannot conceive, is genuine it doesn't matter as both represent expressions of the truth. My concern is those cases where the phenomenon is taken advantage of by those unscrupulous enough to invent an allegation under its guise or, as in your example, where the power of suggestion inadvertently injects a false memory unintentionally taken as real. The scope for error seems enormous. Sorry, I was a tad flippant describing suppression of memory as 'forgetting'. The latter is passive and accidental, while presumably the former is active and intentional in some way. For my own part, if I try to make some unpleasant thought go away I find that it only occupies my consciousness all the more. Prayer and distraction might work, but not usually permanently. I find that I need to tease out such thoughts and get to the bottom of them, solve the problem, if possible, in other words.

This seems to be on the increase. Also, such satanic sentiments are increasingly common amongst those opposing pro-life protests. Unsettling though it might be, there is the consolation that things are becoming less confusing and ambiguous.
