I found the interpretation that this was a reaction to the unbelief of those around him unsatisfactory.

I've been interested in this verse for sometime, it's Psalm 45, or Psalm 44 in the Vulgate; verse 11, it reads:

"Hearken, O daughter, and see, and incline thy ear: and forget thy people and thy father's house."
